    Soundproofing

Having removed the rear seat cushion and squab to access inner hood
release cable, has anyone carried out any internal soundproofing on the
floorpan under the rear seat and behind the squab.I see that on refitting
the rear seat the wire frame has to locate behind the seat pan flange but
would appreciate hearing from anyone that has soundproofed this area,or
other members thoughts on this subject

    Regards
    Frank

I've just tidied up my floor area and fitted new sound deadening pads - pretty much the same as the originals. And before anybody mentions rust traps, the metalwork underneath the originals was some of the best in the car

I've always found these make a noticable difference to noise levels and overall sense of refinement.

I haven't done anything on the squab/boot wall panel but now you mention it....

    Cheers

      Hi Julian

Thanks for your comments and photo both most useful.Having seen your
photo and looked at mine again it would seem there is already some sound
deadening pad already there in the same position. However, i would like to
take the soundproofing a bit further so could you tell me where you got
      your pads from.

      Kind Regards
      Frank

        Hi Frank,

I just got those from a local bodyshop who'd done some work for me. I don't remember the make but they are fairly widely available - I just googled it and found ther'e even a company dedicated to sound deadenoing:shock: http://www.deadening.co.uk/

Good stuff will mould perfectly to the shape underneath it, although gentle heat will help.

I did the inside of my wings and doorsat the same time. It would have been there originally but when a PO had the panels replaced they didn't replace the sound deadening pads.

I think it's a good idea of yours to do more, although maybe it will just highlight the noise from your hood or roof :?Maybe post some pics when you do it?

        Cheers

        Julian

            Hey Frank

I think every bit of extra sound deadening will help a little but we're only talking small percentage points with the thickness and materials available for a car.

I'm presently improving the sound proofing of a Victorian semi where the neighbouring walls are single skin brick. After3cm of new render, fibre insulation and5cm stud wall clad in sound reduction plasterboard you can still hear plenty of noise although much muffled. What chance does < 1cm thick of stick on pad for a car have?

In the middle of larger panels, the pads can stop the panels 'wobbling' and creating a low drumming sound which can be tiring over a long distance. but as already pointed out, wind noise from around the soft top, doors and a burbling V8 up front will dwarf any efforts. I think this is termed flanking noise transmission i.e. it will sneak around the sides of anything you try and put in the way!

            Cheers Johny

I do agree with you Johny and the sound deadening panels aren't even 1 cm - more like 3mm :?

However, having spent my entire career working with cars, I am a big fan of sound deadening pads - not specifically because of the reduction in noise but because of the way thay alter the nature of noise. A classic example is a door shell which sounds as tinny as hell with nodeadening but sounds as if it'smade from steel that's three times as thick when a pad is fitted.

I think I'd refer to the enhanced refinement with sound deadening panels fitted rater than reduced noise levels and I'd certainly advocate fitting them where possible. If you tap the outside of a panel which has gotdeadening on the inside, it just sounds like a more expensive and refined vehicle

              Cheers

Spot on Julian. Sound deadening pads is a misnomer. Sound 'changing to slightly more acceptable' or Sound 'Altering' pads might be better names.

I think when people talk about 'noise', they can unwittingly add together what they hearplus what their other body senses pick up - like vibration through the seat and steering wheel. I think that good quality carpets, large rubber mats and decent seats make a substantial contribution.

                  Hi, Frank,

For what it's worth, I've got some Evo-Stik Flashbanding from Jewsons to hand and was thinking of using that on some underfloor sections. Its flexible, tarry,sticky-backed and has a leaden finish to it. Probably not got the same high temperature properties as a dedicated panel so I'm not going to put it on panels where engine or exhaust heat may be a problem, but that still leaves several other areas. The great temptation was the price - 10m of the stuff on a roll for £9.50, which means I can afford to be more generous with it than normal. And also, if I don't like it, I can always peel it off again.

As I said, for what it's worth..
