    Security Systems and Central Locking

I am in the process of a total strip down and rebuild but whilst keeping the Stag as original as possible, will be incorporating several common-sense upgrades to make the car more user friendly in this day and age.

One of the modifications I would like to fit is a security device such as a remotely controlled alarm/immobiliser with a function that can lock/unlock the doors upon activation. I’m not too bothered about having the windows operated at the same time though that said, it could be a handy function and I’d go along with it if it was there.

Does anyone know if I should have a preference for any particular type of security system or should I just go for anything that seems to suit, and are there any characteristics that I should be avoiding?

I notice that Maplin do a 4-door central locking pack but don’t seem to have a decent alarm/immobiliser system that works with it. I’m presuming that if there is a security system out there with the features that I want, then those Maplin central locking units would work with it.

If there is no history of do’s or don’ts within the club, then I’ll just look around for whatever features suit.

With many thanks for your time and thoughts

Hi Duncan, I've fitted the Toad AI601 to several of my cars in the past and always found it reliable as a basic alarm/immobiliser. Door and window closure are both available with this system but you need to buy a few additional bits to make them work. It's on my list of 'nice things to have' for the Stag but it's not installed yet. Good luck with the rebuild. John

Nice one Al - that's something else for my wish list. Monarch is one of the companies that I'm aware of, but have never used.

I see that they do the roller bearing top front suspension mount that someone was asking about on another thread.

        Cheers

        Julian.

          Hi Duncan,

I have just had a Cobra 4138 alarm and immobaliser fitted to the stag which has incorporated central locking for the doors. I understand from the fitter that I could also include the boot and window closure at a later date if I want to as the system would accomodate it.

          Cheers, Steve

Hi Duncan, this is something I also am considering, after I get the garage built. Having looked on e-bay there is a wide price range. I appreciate that 'Thatcham' cat 1 is desirable from an insurance point of view but many cheaper options seem to do the same thing. Has anybody used the cheaper varieties and what has been their experience.

I am looking at putting central locking in mine. I have the kit and 'stage 1' is to get it installed and at least have both the doors locking and unlocking at the same time. 'Stage 2' is to hook it up to my existing alarm, however I need to be able to lock the doors and arm the alarm separately. My car lives under a cover and when it is windy it triggers the alarm so I have to disarm it and obviously I don't want to leave the doors unlocked!

              Rgds

Hi Duncan, I've just fitted a Hawk HA 280 pro alarm, It has a host of features like remote engine start, although I'm not using that! But options are central locking kit (£25) auto window closer, shock detector (breaking glass) and a sonic microwave sensor so you can leave it with the roof off!

I think I paid £55 off ebay, the central locking kit is extra which I'll fit later in the year

So, what I wonder is how would the remote starter pull the choke knob out?

I'm guessing that the BiB would have something to say about the car starting without anyone in it as well!

Many thanks, john. I'll take a look at them and see how I think I'll get on with it.

Hi Peter, and thanks for the comments.

Having 'Thatcham' written all over itprobably adds £££'s to the cost as well. It's a thought, though and I'll have a word with the club insurers tomorrow to see if an alarm thus branded makes a worthwhile difference to the insurance premium. It probably wouldn't be a practical solution for me if it had to be installed by a registered outfit of security installers, as I' have to take the car from Skye to whereveer. I think this'll be a DIY job for myself as the car is coming together.

Good luck with the garage build. A tip here - always build it bigger than you think you'll need. That is ifspace permits. You'll never regret it.

With best wishes and many thanks,

                              Duncan
