Gent's just did myfirst oil change on my own,and no problems. But what I did notice was that once the bulk of the old oil was drained and I left the last few drips to come out, there was what seemed to be a silvery deposit mixed in with the last say, half an egg cup full of oil. Is this normal and to be expected, or does it indicate excessive ware?? It was not water for sure

No Chris all I know is that 20w50 Comma was put in it about 3000miles ago as I have the 5 litre drum that was supposedly used by the garage. Yes thegarage that charged me £208 for an oil change and filter..
However I did add an additive last summer to stop an annoying small oil leak
The silver stuff was not abrasive as I rubbed it between my fingers as it came out of the sump plug hole. You may be right though could be some sediment built up over time
I was just curious to see if anyone elsemay have seen this before. All new to me still, gingerly finding my way around the mechanical type stuff.

Hat's off to you Mike for starting to do things on the car yourself.
I have no idea what the residue is if it doesn't feel even slightly metalic.
Also not heard about that "bargain" oil change you had!....maybe they included some sterling silver in the oil??! I think it wards off Werewolves or something

Drop a magnet into the old oil and see what sticks. On second thoughts don't as sometimes it is quite worrying:P, especialy if you find bits of water pump teeth:shock:
I have seen this silvery deposit myself, particularly after an engine rebuild, if nothing sticks to the magnet it is possibly aluminium from the pistons or the cam follower bores in the head but it only takes microscopic particles to give a silvery appearance, and these probably go straight through the filter.I wouldn't worry if there are no obvious particles to be felt in the oil

Yeh, what a bloody laugh that turned out to be. The only specialist there is is the ROM or my trusty Haynes manual LOL LOL.Hat's off to you Mike for starting to do things on the car yourself.
