Help please - I'm struggling with this new forum

I couldn't understand why I felt so grumpy this morning and then I realised that i've just spent the last 2 hours trying to get my head round this new forum. I'm normally reasonably ok with new things but I am struggling with this

Anyway, I wonder if anyone could kindly help me with a few points in particular ( I have tried searching for the answers but without success):

    1) I used to get an email alert every time someone had posted something in a topic that I had replied to, or if anyone sent me a PM. Can I have this on the new system and if so, how?

    2) I have a box at the top telling me that I have 631 notifications ! When I look they are my PMs and when I go to them it says "Inbox contains 633 messages. You have 1,303 messages stored, of a total 50 allowed" !! Help

    3) How do you insert pictures

    4) How do you insert emoticons. (Ps When I previewed this message I see I've got a couple !! that's where I put in a colon/bracket)

    5) What on earth is the difference between 'reply', 'reply to thread' and 'quick reply' ??

    6) What does 'subscribe to this thread' mean?

    7) What does 'linear mode', 'hybrid mode' and 'threaded mode' mean ?????

Maybe I'll get it one day - if you don't hear much from you, you'll know why. I think I prefer playing with my car - at least I understand that

    A non-cheery Julian

Ps What the bloody hell does "Automatically parse links in text" mean ??

Pps Trying to send this and I get "1.You have included a total of 5 images and/or videos in your message. The maximum number that you may include is 4. Please correct the problem and then continue again. Images include use of smilies, the BB code [img] tag, and HTML <img> tags. Videos are included with the BB code [video] tag. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator. -

    Hi Julian,

As they said in that sci-fi movie "You are not alone"

I am unable to log on via my mobile phone, which I do when waiting around at airports, because the username and password boxes won't respond to the touchscreen. The remaining buttons do, but they aren't much use if I can't log on

I guess we will get used to it eventually................

PS my phone is a Nokia 5230 if anyone can help..........

i generally use quick reply to reply to a thread .this way you do not get the previous persons comments in your answer . as to photos and images i use photobucket to store my images then you just copy and paste the img code into your reply . it sounds complicated but once you have done it a couple of times it is quite easy.

        Hi Dave,

Glad I'm not alone ! Together with Martin who, like me, can't see how to post pics, it seems that the more prolific contributors are the ones who are finding it hardest to get it !!

Taking it step by step, when you reply, click on the "go advanced" button. You will see a lot more options like smilies etc and all the picture options.

The messages were imported from the old system and the easy way to get rid of the notification is to open each message just once, then close it.

Go to "Settings" at the top of the page and you will get into your profile where you have to modify the eMail notifications to get an eMail sent each time. You will see a lot of options there which will solve most of your problems.

Try out all of the above, then let's tackle the remaining questions afterwards...

Thanks a lot Drew, that's really helpful. Cheers.

Now you won't be hearing from me for a while as I go and look at all of my 631 PMs again !!

For pictures, there are multiple ways.

                Try this:

When you reply, you will see a task bar of icons B I U A etc. just above the box where you type your reply. You will see a little icon which displays "Insert Image" when your mouse hovers over it. Click on that and you can insert images from your PC just where you want them in the text.

When the inserted image appears in your reply box, you will see a small pencil point in its top left corner. Click on that and you can choose options for the size and placement of the image.

                  Subscribing to Threads

A very useful feature is found when you look at a thread that interests you, but you don't actually want to post a comment. At the top of the thread you will see a pull-down menu called "Thread Tools".

If you then click on "Subscribe to Thread", you will be notified whenever someone posts something on that thread.

How you are notified depends on the Settings in your profile (see above posts from me).

If you click on "Settings" at the top of the page, you will also see what threads you have subscribed to; and if you then click on "View All Subscribed Threads" you will see what notification will be sent when a new post is made.

Julian, if you have so many messages, then mark all and select "Mark as read" from the pull-down menu at the bottom of the message window.

Julian - do not loose heart - Drew seems to be sorting you out so I will not complicate things but it is Ok once you sort a few bits out - if you are still stuck just keep asking.

Sorry Dave do not know about phones but I am sure someone does

Patience, patience! My approach to new stuff like this is just to do the easy stuff first, and learn one new thing at a time. I find this builds confidence, and seems the natural way to learn.

                          Giles,
I now seem to be able to log on via the phone. The boxes are now responding. No idea how that changed

The next hurdle is to be able to post/reply via the phone. Normally by touching the character box my phone opens up a QWERTY keyboard with a preview pane which shows what I am typing. Now nothing appears in the preview pane, but when I exit the keyboard and go back to the web page you can see what I have typed. My memory ain't good enough to type a whole message without seeing it in front of me before I post, so until this is resolved I am restricted from participating unless sat at a PC.

                            Hi Julian,

I think experimentation is the key to most of your questions ;-D - in other words I don't know yet!

As far as "Automatically parse links in text" goes, when ticked, the software will process the text and if it recognises a web link it will turn it clickable as opposed to just leaving it as text.

The key thing to remember is that you don't need to know the whole system all at once. As long as you can post a message and read the replies you have got the hang of the fundamentals and the rest can come later as and when you have the time to play around a bit.

                            Ok, playing as I type!

Regarding No 7, Linear mode is a display identical to the previous forum i.e. the replies are just listed in chronological order. Threaded mode gives you a hierarchical 'tree' structure. This ties in with your No. 5. Under each entry there is a reply button. When you click this you are not replying to the whole thread as before, but to that persons entry. This builds up the 'Threaded' structure.

Anyone know the difference between 'Reply to Thread' and 'Quick Reply'?

                            Rgds

it could be due to your phone not supporting flash, i will try it on a few phones tonight.
