Good grief - I can post full size pics again! Presumably Carl solved the problem!

Dasadrew - I've never seen one of those before, what is that? A helicopter or a plane? Do the two props negate the need for a tail rotor?

                Hi Andrew,

it's a technology demonstrator from the company I work for - Eurocopter. It's just known as X3 or X³. The idea is high speed although the torque control is, as you say, possible without a tail rotor.

It also allows forward flight without nose down attitude and climbing at an angle.

Very impressive. Hope its got a better g/box than the EC225..................

Initial investigations into the 22 October ditching in the North Sea of a Eurocopter EC225 Super Puma show strong similarities to an earlier controlled ditching...

Brilliant film (and plane) Drew. Rather suspect that elfnsafety wouldn't allow a helicopter v train film over here.

It must have pretty good loadspace to fit in the orchestra and choir

                    Cheers

That's very thin ice here at the moment (and the last year or two) as you might imagine. A lot of people are very disillusioned and it's got absolutely top priority here. Afraid I can't talk about the detailed reasons but please be assured that enormous efforts are being spent in the company to sort it. Oil & Gas is an extremely tortuous profile for a H/C - like taking a Stag on a World Rallye Special Stage for 4 hours a day. At least when all procedures are followed to the letter (like the recent one) the chances are very good. I have some "insider" appreciation of the risks you guys take as my brother commissioned rigs for most of his career.

For all such eventualities, the crashworthiness is about the highest on the design list nowadays. If you saw the Italian NH90 which was "flown" into a lake a few years back and the crew (except for one unfortunate soul whose injuries weren't attributable to the H/C) "walked away" then you see what developments are being made. Look out for the all new EC725 which should become our new Oil & Gas flagship

I can imagine that it is. I have flown in the EC225 and TBH it isn't my favourite H/C. Too cramped for 19. We use the S92 which, admittedly, has had its teething problems, but at least it is comfortable.

I hadn't heard that there was an EC725 in the offing. Is this a further developments of the Puma, or something altogether new and larger?

Completely new design. Designed from the outset for Oil & Gas. Puma (SA330) was for tactical troop transport. EC725 is just going through the certification process. You never know, it might even be possible to close the cabin door on it without having to slam it shut three times before it latches!
