    brake clinder seeping

    Hi all

Having fixed a number of little problems that have occurred since I bougth the Stag in November, i thought I was ready for a season of razzing about and events etc, so had the car out of the garage today and was having a good look around. Discovered a tiny amount of seepage of brake fluid from the joint between the servo and the brake master cylinder. Not dripping or anything like that, joint enough to moisten my finger (!) as I draw it across the bottom of the joint. Reservoir still looks full. Would this seepage be because some seal has gone inside the cylinder and it needs to be overhauled? Should there be any rubber seal or gasket between servo and master cylinder?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Gord, sorry mate but the seals in the master cylinder are on the way out, if you sit at traffic lights with the footbrake applied, does it start to gently sink ? That weep will collect into a drop and fall on the paint, bye bye paint. Martin.

as Martin says I am afraid - when my master cylinder went it was leaking out of here, all worked ok but a gradual loss of fluid. At first hoped it was the reservoir leaking but of course it wasn't.

Oh poop, I was afraid of that. Looks like another journey of discovery for me.

Hi folks, can anyone advise me on best way to drain the brake reservior and cylinder so that I can replace the cylinder. Don't want to spill any (more) fluid on the paintwork! Is it just bleed one corner until the level is low enough, then tighten up bleed screw again to keep fluid in system, then replace cylinder and bleed whole system as described elsewhere in this forum?

Also any suggestion on how much fluid I need to buy to complete the job. Planning to replace cylinder, change hoses for braided and new bleed screws. Anything else I should consider at the same time?

          Thanks, Gord

            Hi Gord,

If just changing the master cylinder I would bleed off fluifd from the N/s front brake cylinder, if changing the hoses etc as well I reckon you would need 500ml of fluid. When idid my master cylinder i also changed the brake pipes to copper.

                Hi

I'm either being ham fisted or stupid, or perhaps both, but is it possible to remove the servo and brake master cylinder without first removing the clutch master cylinder?? No matter how I rotate the servo, I can't get it to come out. Is it possible to separate the brake master from the servo in situ?

My tale of woe continues with this car. Broke both bleed valves on the rear wheels trying to drain the brake reservoir, so now facing new cylinders. Shoes have about 3mm material on them so think I'll do them too while I'm at it.

Best to think of it as a learning experience!

when I did mine I did not remove the servo, just unbolted the master cylinder, for memory had to use a small socket and a flexible drive to get it in there. Manual says you have to remove the servo, but you don't.

Keep your chin up bud - we've all been there with these 1 hour jobs that take all weekend. When you are out in the Stag in the summer sunshine, it will all be worth it (trust me). regards, Peter f

Thanks, Giles, I have undone the two bolts that join the cylinder to the servo, and the pushrod is disconnected from the clutch pedal, but how does the cylinder detach from the servo. It seems to separate a little, bit I'm loathe to pull it apart too hard in case I break something. Any further suggestions gratefully welcomed.

as I remember it should just pull apart, hopefully someone else will confirm to be sure

Just done mine this afternoon. Top bolt is easy, lower one is a pig unless you have 3/8" wobble extension bars, bought mine at Stoneleigh last year, took almost a year before I used them, and I had to be reminded that I had them, thanks Bob.

                          It pulls off.

Hi, Once you've disconnected the two brake pipes and undone the two nuts, the master should come off with a bit of a wriggle, don't be afraid to be firm with it. Martin.

OK, will give it a bit more brute strength.

Thanks, everyone for the tips. I really appreciate all the help this forum provides, though feel a bit guilty sometimes at asking naive questions.
