Had trouble recently starting the stag (auto type 65 gearbox ). Found the inhibitor switch on the gearbox faulty. Replaced this for a NEW one off ebay, about £50. This seemed to be a bit hit and miss, although the switch tested OK off the car. Eventually buggered it up completely by taking it on and off many times trying to get it to work consistently. Decided to order one from a reputable stag supplier, again it worked on test but as I fitted the spade terminals from the cable to the switch under the car, one of the terminals broke off the switch. Ordered a third one, this time from rimmer bros and fitted it successfully, although the reversing lights work intermittently but I've decided to leave well alone. This switch seems very Heath Robinson, there must be something better than this. Anyone got any ideas. I've spent around £200 replacing this switch. The one from Rimmers, although the most expensive,seems to be good quality, I'm not sure the other two hadn't been reconditioned in some way. Terry

Thanks for the replies lads. I'm sorry Martin, I didn't realise there was a set up procedure for the switch on the type 65 gearbox, I thought that was for the type 35,. It you can tell me where I can find the info that would be great. I had thought of doing away with the switch altogether and mounting a biased switch in the car, so you have to hold the switch down while starting the car and when you release it, it returns to the open position. The only problem then would be the reversing lights. Terry

There is a block connection on the left side of the engine (viewed from inside), it is located under the fuse box and just over the g/box b/housing. It gets quite dirty and corroded. I cleaned off all the muck and the connectors that had turned "green", my reverse lights started working and no more probs with switch.

Heed Martin's advice and don't by-pass it. I did and jumped in the the car one day and started it in gear - and bang - shot forward into the side of a BMW and pushed that into a new Astra. Eventually got another switch from Paddocks - and touch wood that is still working. Had to jack the Stag up to fit it and you have to be careful as they are not the most robust of parts.

Hi Sukh, I've made up a new harness from the switch into the engine doing away with two connector blocks so I believe the problem lies with the switch. If you've ever tested one of the switches with a multimeter, the switch is only made, ie contacts closed, for about a millimetre of travel of the switch so there's no margin of error.
Hi Terry, yes I will take Matin's advice, but my idea with the switch in the car was to use a switch that you had to hold in position while starting the car, once released the switch it would return to the open circuit position so minimising the chance of starting in gear. Anyway Martin's convinced me not to do it and I'm sure he's correct. I still think the gearbox switch is a really poor component. I'm sure it would be easier to monitor the auto gearstick.
