    Brake cylinder circlip

    Hi all

Decided in another thread to overhaul brakes, hoses, master cylinder etc.

Any got any ideas on how to fit the new circlip that secures the rear brake cylinder to the backplate. Rimmers do a tool but it is out of stock. Anyone got any other ideas on how I can get this done. It seems a bit of a struggle otherwise to this newbie mechanic.

    Thanks in advance

Can't believe it. When I made the earlier post, the tool was out of stock. Now it's back in stock. Will order it tomorrow.

      Hello,
What is this tool (http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-17H7949T) supposed to do or facilitate?
      Kind regards,
      Dieter.

You might be able to pick one up at Moss's in Cheadle Heath..sure I nearly got one from there. In the end I think I fabricated something out of a socket.

Hi Dieter The brake slave cylinder is secured to the backplate by a circlip. It's quite large and reasonably strong and locates in a groove cut in the metal of he cylinder. I'm guessing the tool works as follows. It has a tapered clinder at the left hand end in the picture, and I assume you put the circlip over the narrow end. You screw the tool into the cylinder in situ on the backplate, then screw the additional nut towards the big cylinder on the tool. As you keep tightening, the big cylinder pushes the circlip up the taper (without breaking it) and so it will pass over the metal post of the cylinder and pop into the groove. You then remove the tool.

I'm guessing that's how it works. It seems expensive for what it is, but it's probably safer than trying to bang the circlip on using a socket for example.

If anyone else knows different, let us know!!

If your talking about the small circlip that holds the brake cylinder to the back plate you can use a pair of long nose or needle nose pliers. Put the cylinder into the back plate and place the clip with the two prongs if you will facing down towards the groove of the cylinder and tap it with a small punch and hammer if you use the pliers its the same first step then put the pliers one jaw over the top of the clip and the other over the cylinder and squeeze the clip into the groove. If you have all this on the bench its not that hard requires a bit more fiddling on the car but quite easy.

            Cheers Stuart

Hi Dave, thanks. Moss's - still learning I'm afraid, where's that? I thought about using a socket but seemed a 'club-hammer' type approach. I've also noticed that the brake adjusters have been welded in one position on the offside wheel. As this is different to the n/s, one of them must be wrong. Are the adjusters nornmally quite effective - some people on here seem to think they're not very good. I can't decide whether to get new ones, or refit as they are.

                Hi Gordon

Moss Europe...they're really MG specialists but something in the back of my mind tells me they use the same C Clip
Never heard of adjusters been welded up before and to be honest
I've never had a problem with mine

Don't think I actually hammered my clips on just used the socket to keep it lined up whilst using something simliar to Elvimto's method

                  Dave and elvimto,

Many thanks for tips, will persevere with pliers, mole and socket tomorrow, or get tool if I'm too weak or stupid.

If I buy it, I don't think I'll need it much, so would happy to share it round the SOC for the price of postage, and maybe 50p for the rental to help recoup my costs!! I am a Scot after all.

Spending time on brakes today. Replacing hoses, cylinders, shoes etc. Can anyone tell me what is the correct positioning of the brake adjusters as I reassemble the rear drum. Should the two parts be located up against the back of the curved shoe, or at the opposite end of the travel ie as far away from the shoe they will go?

                        Thanks
