    Salt Spots on Alloys

I got married in December & used the Stag to take the bridesmaids ( my daughters ) to the church & my new wife & I left the church in her! in the snow!!!!!

After the honeymoon I got the old girl out of the garage ( thats the Stag!!!! ) the alloys are ruined.....yes I know I should have cleaned them on my honeymoon night but I had other things on my mind!!!!!!!!

I have cleaned them with Autosol but after a week or so the salt spots come back...any ideas ?

    cheers

    Hi Simon

Congrats on getting married. Seeing as it snowed just as well you do not have a white stag

Sorry, don't have an answer to your problem regarding the alloys. Mine have the same issue.

    Regards

    Bruce

I would say it depends if it is corrosion beneath laquer in which case you will need to strip the laquer and then re finish them. If they are not laquered but plain alloy then have you tried a polish like Autosol?

As said if not laquered a good polish with a metal polish will have them as new again.

I've used autosol with wire wool on a motorbike alloy before and it worked brilliantly

Hiya Simon, congratulations on your marriage, no man should be alone !
I'm with Giles here, if the spots are returning, you have pin holes in the lacquer, either keep cleaning them, bearing in mind they will quickly get worse, or
use Nitromors to strip the lacquer off completely then re-polish, yes it's hard work, but keeping them shining is relatively easy. Martin.

Martins right - if they are lacquered, strip it off with nitromors and wire wool. Buy a polishing kit off fleabay for your drill (about £25 for a kit), spend a day buffing them up with the soap and polishing wheels, and Autosol them every 2/3 months.
              good luck

i won't comment on the fix which has been mentioned - but a quick way of avoiding the problem in future is to spray WD40 on the alloys (obviously try not to spray through onto your disks!) this will work well for a while - keep reapplying if you use it regularly. I have brushed waxoyl onto them in the past as well - it works fine, but it doesn't look so nice.
