    Newbie..

Newbie so bear with me, having a issues with my stag at the moment, which i can’t work through, i replaced the alternator (18acr) and battery as they were both playing up, i now get the ignition light staying on all the time, it used to come on before i changed the alt/battery but would go out after about 5 minutes once travelling, hence the reason for changing the alt/battery.
BTW whilst trying to sort this out, the radiator decided to pierce a hole in itself for no reason that i can find, so now have to replace that as well...
    Are Stags normally this frustrating
    Cheers
    Phil

    Hi Phil, welcome.

Are you sure it's not a Duff alternator have you checked to see if it's charging! also check all the conections at both ends.

    Ian.

Welcome to the club and forum. Is your stag a recent purchase? Dont forget that any classic car of this age has probably had numerous previous owners, and been worked on by many many mechanics, some of which may not have been kind to the car. Given time and careful attention your car should become more reliable and hopefully will reward you with some great drives.

If you have replaced the battery and alternator with good ones you must have a wiring fault. Try pulling off the thin wire to the alternator and see if the lamp goes out. If it does you prob still have a faulty alternator. Get someone local with electrical knowledge to help; where are you based?

Hi Phil and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to say that I haven't got an answer for you re your charging problem but I wanted to say hello

Chris (Vmad) is absolutely right - you'll take a while to get any problems and niggles sorted. I'm still working through my car right now trying to prevent problems before they occur and I've had mine well over a year.

Once you've done that and you have confidence in your car then you'll be able to really enjoy it for all its worth However I know that's not too much help or consolation for you right now.

Good luck and all the very best.

        Julian

            Hello Phil

I've had my Stag for a year and have had a number of 'minor' problems that have included: leaking wheel cylinder, handbrake operation, viscous coupling and fuel pump. I have sorted the issues out myself sourcing parts from ebay and Rimmers. Fortunately most tasks are fairly straight forward, a bonus of owning and running a classic. The car passed its MOT last Nov without any problems. My next task is to replace the brake hoses with Goodridge stainless steel braided hoses. I have learnt much about the car by fixing various faults which I have found to be both satisfying and enjoyable. Good look. Andrew

              Hello and welcome Phil.

No advice for you but hope you sort it out. Mine suffers electrical problems which prevents it starting on any sort of regular basis.

Thank you all for the warm welcome, i have been used to old land/range rovers, where most things are well...simple to be honest...
Had the stag since last June, brought of a chap who had not used the car since 1993, have done over 1500 miles in her, so far i have replaced...drive shaft, shocks, springs, poly-bushes, rear brakes, front seat foams and windscreen rubber, just had a bit of a run of things with her in the past couple of months, starting with a leaky sheering shaft...ended up replacing...
Gearbox oil cooler, Radiator hoses, radiator Headed bottle, pressure cap, air filter, HT leads, spark plugs, all the steering ball joints and track rod ends.... was hoping to get her resprayed this year however will have till next year now!! So she will be running around with rather ‘tatty’ paintwork.

Welcome to the forum. Cant help with your problem im afraid but nice to see another 78 auto in brown. If the Earls Colne is the Colchester one hopefully we will see you at one of the club nights where Brown is becoming more popular than yellow! Hope you get it sorted quickly.
