    water tranfer housing, oil leak?

I have been trying to find the sourse of a slight oil leak and am now convinsed that it is coming from the bottom of the right hand cylinder head water tranfer housing joint with the head

Is that possible? is this housing for water as the name suggests or does oil pass through it as well?

It's probably the the half moon seal at the back of the head or the cam cover gasket, there is no oil in the transfer housing.

    Ian.

Just a thought, when you say right hand do you mean drivers or passengers side.

      Hi Sparcy,
It's not coming from the rear of the cam cover or half moon rubber seal in that area is it. Suggest wiping it all off off and observe for dribbles if that is a possibility.
      FWIW.

      cheers

Yes you are correct the lower section of the water transfer housings are oil drain ways the joint should seal the water from the oil .

Thanks for that, it is the drivers side, off side. I had changed the half moon earlier, but if there is oil in the housing that explains it

If you are going to change the joint, then just remember that there are 5 bolts holding the housing on one on each corner and one in the centre( don't forget the one in the centre)

Not that I doubt what your saying Les, and never have had cause to remove them, but looking at the pictures on the Rimmers site it doesn't look like it is an oil gallery. obviously if you have had this problem you know this from experience.

                Ian.

It's not an oil gallery its an oil drain end cap that's all. My understanding of the term gallery on an engine is for the supply of oil. I have never had the problem of one leaking, but I have had several of them off cylinder heads.

                  Les.

These are the "galleries" the housing is covering. The half moon of the cam cover is the dark shape at the top of the picture. You can see water staining in three of the "galleries". The topmost one seems to simply be a void.

(Sorry the picture looks a bit like Christmas)

And removing/replacing these with the engine in situ is a real PITA. Possible, but certainly not a 5-minute job.
