    New Stereo

Decided to treat myself to a new stereo today cos the radio on my old kenwood unit has stopped working. Got an alledged 200 pound kenwood for 80 quid in halfords clearence sale that you can plug an ipod into. What I thought was going to be a mammath task to fit turned out to be a doddle, the new unit is exactly the same size as the fifteen year old one and better still the wiring loom and plug at the back of the unit was identical. Took less than five minutes to change them over, brilliant, well done kenwood.

Can you link to the model you bought? I'm interested in replacing (well fitting a working one) into mine. At the moment I'm leaning towards a tadpole reconditioned original with FM/iPod internals but at ~£260 it's not cheap. Would be happy to entertain others but don't want any bling when it's turn on.

      Hi Scarts,

If i have done this right its this one on the Halfords website,

Kenwood KDC-4547UB CD Radio with iPod Connection
      Cat. code: 216759-0
Kenwood KDC-4547UB MP3/WMA/AAC USB/CD-receiver comes with direct iPod USB connection and control.

The lighting on the unit is blue and is quite bright although i have noticed in the function menu there is a dimmer but i have not had time to explore this yet. Thankfully though, no silly flashing lights. Below is the unit fitted.

That looks quite nice, but to be honest it's a great quality photo and I'm more impressed with the finish of the knobs and the heater control unit, all of which look like they're in excellent condition. The wooden gear knob is a nice touch also!

            Hi Frank,
I already had 8" JBL speakers in the rear cubby panels but yes I did fit an additional pair of speakers under the dash, these are SXT 4" In Phase from Car audio centre £70. I made some mounts from an old piece of laminate floor board and covered these with self adhesive foam sound insulation which I got from Maplins (its for computer towers). Thes are fitted under the dash by screwing to the underside of the dash as far towards the front of the car as you can get away with and wedging into the bulkhead foam/firewall. They cant be seen when sitting in the car. Unfortunately, the Kenwood unit doesnt go in far enough before it jams on the heater unit, it sticks out about 8-10mm. I put black electrical tape round the unit and you can barely tell it projects forward.

As per another thread by Vmad even with the four speakers the bass thuds rather than booms. So over this weekend i have installed one of these In Phase USW10 6.5" 300W Ultra Compact Active Subwoofer
£159.99 - in-car-stuff.com It will slide under the passanger seat when not in use but you need to pull it out into the rear footwell to use it otherwise the seat resinates. However, in the rear footwell it produces as much bass as a stag cockpit can handle and sounds awesome. Not sure how much I will use it as I like the sound of the V8 burble but got persuaded by my 17 year old son.

Steve, just decided to upgrade my 12yr old Kenwood unit as it kept turning off when vol taken above 23 but also sound no longer great. Saw your post, love the look of the 4547UB unit and have been happy to stay with Kenwood, so purchased one, arrived today, as the footprint and connections are exactly the same, was installed in 10mins and fantastic sound, now I realise how poor the sound on myold one had got, and doesn't cut out either. Also ordered new Kenwood speakers to compliment the new unit although the old ones work okay, they look a little tired.
Anyway, thks again as usual the Forum provides gr8 advice and recommendations.

                Cheers
