Interior light switch

Gents, I have bought a second hand interior light switch, connected it up but my interior lights stay on! The door lights go off. I don't have a Mk2 wiring diagram, i have put the wires back the they were on the old switch!
Any ideas? i have cleaned the new switch

hi Jason, don't know if its relevant but the mk1 door switches are different than a mk2 and cant be interchanged ( I know from experience !)and I vaguely remember the mk1 interior light system being different from the later mk2 so I wonder if you have a mk1 interior light switch ? if your old one is salvageable I would try a clean up of the internal contacts or try martin at just triumph, Congleton, cheshire he has a good stock of cars and bits ( no connection etc )

Hi Jason,

A lot depends on when your car was made - there were significant changes from something like LD40000 onwards but there were never any official wiring diagrams

I have quite a bit of information about the later type but first it would help to know if yours is the later type or not. Do you have one, or two, wires going to the door switches in the A pillar?

Also, does your switch look like this with, most importantly, two black wires which are linked together?

The door switches I have (74) break the power wire before it goes to the interior switch so it has 2 wires to it rather than the other type that connects only one wire to earth when the door is opened.So have you got 1 or 2 wires to your door switches?

OK. Pete, i have a mk2 car with a mk2 switch from stag8, this is the same as my old one (which has a broken terminal, hence the change). Julian, yes it's the same as yours, I know the black wires are earthed, but no matter how I configure the other wires, the interior light ( T bar and console lights) stay on but I can get the puddle lights to operate via the doors correctly. It's a little puzzling, especially as I'm "supposed" to be an electrical commissioning engineer!!!!

My Interior light switch is stripped and easily photographable - if no rush you can take a look on Sunday? I recollect I had a similar problem when I did mine last year.

I think you have a dodgy switch and one or both contacts are not breaking from the negative (terminals 1 & 2 on the diagram).
Try disconnecting the black wires - that should leave the lights only working on the door switches. Connect the black onto terms 1 & 2 individually to see which contact is causing the problem. May just be a matter of opening the switch up & cleaning the contacts - assuming nothing broken.

With the switch disconnected, my interior lights stay on, how it looks like the switch swtches the earth? I have cleaned the switch contacts and they look ok? Ian, I was hoping to get this sorted for sunday cos I want to got to spares day in the stag, thanks for the offer tho.

Sorted, T bar light terminals touching the metal work completing the circuit, hence interior light always on. Thanks for the replies.

Just had to wake up this thread!

I found this thread great - lifesaver etc!

But see if anyone can solve this dilemma ...

I've got all the wires hanging from the middle T bar.

I realise the red cable goes to the driving side door.

Problem is.... a test light shows that if I open the door the light goes OFF!! Close the door and the light goes ON!
There's a clue....

the light glows (ie does not fully light up).

Any ideas anyone, please

There was a change from Mk1 to Mk2 wher the light earths via the switch or gets power via the switch or something like that. Sounds like it could be related to your situation?
