Viscous Couplings; still bad one out there

After all the problems widely reported on failures of viscous couplings it seems we still have a problem. I had understood that quite some while ago, maybe two or three years ago that some faulty ones were in circulation, and following that suppliers had acknowledged the problem, identified its cause (wrong type of oil) and apparently dealt with it.

In Sept 2009 I fitted a replacement one bought new from a major supplier, and this has now failed already; the fan is running at full engine speed, and roars when you rev up; they are supposed to run at max about 2500 revs.

I would advise anyone who is not sure to check theirs.

I will be notifying the supplier, and will be reporting any further info I get.

SNAP!! same here,..still got mine. Very reluctant to change it.

    But....mine was from the EX-MOD.

I had one 'burst' a long time ago....did plenty of damage......nearly sent shrapnel through the bonnet....pierced the expansion bottle, battery case & radiator.
There are 2 secrets to staying on top :- 1. Don't give everything away.

Remove the fan and viscous completly and use an electric fan. Is there a shorter version of the pully bolt?

I fitted a new Land Rover one last year - the same part No as the Ex-MOD ones ERC2849 and it came in a 'Land Rover genuine parts' box. The coupling is quite stiff and only moves a couple of blades (if that) when flicked. It also roars when revved, is this coupling supposed to be stiffer than the TKC101?
I have Manual O/D with a tall diff and rarely take the engine above 4000rpm so not too concerned about the fan breaking up. It cools the engine though, rock steady at 1/3 scale on the gauge whatever ambient temp and speed. Unfortunately I dont have anything to compare to as I ran for years on electric only before fitting it. Much more stable than electric fan only and it moves air around under the bonnet all the time when stood in traffic.
Yes, the pulley bolt is a standard UNF thread, I sourced a high tensile shorter bolt and used it with a washer when i didn't have the fan. Anyone like Bapp should have one in stock fairly cheap.

Andrew. yeas a shorter bolt is available because I have done this. I know the bolt I bought (local shop) is 1/2" shorter than the original, but can't remember the lenght or size!
