How do I remove the crankshaft pulley bolt?

I'm starting my re-conversion to TV8 and have started stripping the donor car's engine ready for removal.

I am assuming to remove the fan, VC & pulley assembly, all I need to do is remove the crankshaft end bolt. Is there a best method for this and is it standard or reverse thread? I was considering using an extension bar & a heavy hammer, but thought I should pause for a moment

THE absolute bestest method if you have the possibility is a compressed air impact wrench. It simply vibrates the thing out and really works a treat.
    The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

Unfortunately I don't have one of those, though it sounds like a large hammer will have to do. To loosen, viewing from the front, is it anti-clockwise?

My way of doing it has been to wrap some chain round the pully and lock it around something (like one of the engine lift lugs), so that it will not move when the chain tightens.
Then use a long torque wrench on the nut, and I am almost certain you pull it
anti-clockwise (long time since I last did it), but I think (from memory) it takes something close to 100lbs of pressure to loosen it.
I am sure someone one will correct me if I am wrong.

By the way the chain I used was an old dog lead - strong chain at one end and leather strap at the other, and it was the leather strap end (with loop) that I hooked over the lift lug. We had two large Samoyeds when we lived in the U.K., hence the need for a strong chain dog lead , as they were very strong (the dogs and the chain!).

Can be very tight, if a manual you can put in gear and chock wheels, put handbrake on all these as well as other methods listed above.Think i even had a bar(scaffold type) to extend leaverage on torque wrench.

            Cheers Terry, it's off!!

That chain method works well. I had tried as Sunnystag had suggested but it was wanting to crawl off the front of the ramps.

            Many thanks guys,

I used stilsons on the narrower bit of the pulley at the back with a bit of rectangular tube as an extension to the handle to hold the pulley and an old torque wrench (Long Handle) to undo the bolt. Attached Pics were taken when bolting the new one back up - bolt threads are normally handed.

And use 4th not 1st ,so less power against the hand brake.

I did just like Dave did and it worked for me. But that brings me to a question that I hope someone can help with.

What do you use to turn over the engine whenever you need to? I've got the big stiltsons that I used to hold the crank when I undid the bolt, however the teeth just don't grip enough if I want to turn the engine. I've tried a chain wrench but that also usually slips.

I wish Mr Triumph had put a couple of flats on the pulley centre and I even wonder whether it might be worth doing that myself.

                  Any thoughts guys?

                  Cheers

                    Hi Julian,

Stilsons on the pulley works for me.

I've always used stilsons just behind the pulley, but find it easier to get them on by removing the timing plate that's bolted on the timing cover............If your's are slipping that suggests you may need a new pair, teeth are worn !!!

                        Thanks Al & Roger,

It could be that my stilsons are worn, they were my father's and I know he had them for 30+ years and I've had them 15+ !!

Or else maybe they're the wrong size?

                        Cheers

Perhaps they are left handed and you need right handed?

24" Stilsons on the shaft/breaker bar on the nut or 'windey gun' on the nut are the methods I'd use. The bolt will probably be very tight!
The assembly is a harmonic balancer and has rubber between the pulley and core. If you hold the pulley you risk tearing the rubber and the pulley slipping around the core so that the timing notch is out.
                            Mark.

That reminds me - they're metric. Damn
