    CAM COVER paint and questions

    Hi All

I won a new driver side cam cover on the bay to replace a dented item missing the brackets for ht leads. It arrived today and looks straight and shiny however....

It has been painted inside and out. I am worried about the paint inside might damage the internals of the engine should it happen to flake off - i don't know what sort of paint it is nor whether it is resistant to temperature and oil. Also I can see that the breather mesh has not been removed so have no idea whether it is full of media that might have been used to blast the original paint off..

So I plan to strip the lot off with nitromors and remove the mesh from the breather to ensure no crud is in it.

Anyone got any tips for getting the mesh out. I planned to use a thin cutting disk to score down each side. then make up a new panel to weld in once I am happy it is all clean

Should I even be thinking about painting the inside of the cam cover?

What paint colour has been used for that authentic "painted" cam cover?

yeah I know there are a load of Chrome jobs out there but I am not heading down that route

    Thanks

Sorry Kev, but I think the Air cleaner box is the Dove Grey, just bought two aerosols to refurb an old one I bought of Stanstag now he's got a shiny Weber ?

All Cam covers I've seen have been Silver, unless you've got loads of dosh (Red crackle like the Supercharged Stag) or plenty of time (Chrome and like to clean them?) and then the odd colour coded ones? White would be as bad as keeping Chrome clean though....

[QUOTE=Ian F;133039]Sorry Kev, but I think the Air cleaner box is the Dove Grey,

Now you may not chose to believe this, but the original air filter colour was Duck Egg Blue, the same as painted on the underside of fighter aircraft in the European theatre during WW2. If you don't believe me, have a look at the work bench at TSSC HQ, in the corridor leading to the coffee shop. It was a dull finish blue grey and a leftover - true. Martin.

Thanks chaps, so I know what colour to paint the outside.

Am I correct in thinking that painting the inside is a no?

Might be a daft question , but why would the inside of a cam cover require painting? Unless it is clear that the paint was applied as part of the manufacturing process of the cover, I'd get rid of it. Paint flakes in the oilways.......

It wouldn't as far as I am aware but the item I just got cheap off e-bay has thick silver paint inside and out. Now I need to nitromor it all off and start again. Heaven only knows why the seller had it painted inside. But happy days eh

nope, more like some enamel based paint. I can peel it off and there are sections around the inside of the oil filler and edge of the breather gauze where it is flaking orf. Shame because on the outside the job looks pucker!

The only way I have ever been able to get the mesh out is to dill out the spot welds and remove the plate. If you do remove the plate then can I sugest that you don't bother cleaning the wire mesh, just replace them with stainless steel scourer pads. Most of the main supermarkets sell pack's of them for £1 or £1.50.
