Leaking Hood

[Colonel Mustard]

Took Colonel Mustard for its first MOT since we bought it (which it passed). But as the car sat outside the garage for a hour in the pouring rain, the hood started to leak.

This is the first time the I've had the car out in the rain with the soft top. It is weeping through where all the stitching is. Not actuall dripping water into the car but the inside of the hood fabric is now very wet.

There are no tears that I can see in the hood fabric.

What is the best way to reproof them? There are plenty of products on the market to waterproof or reproof fabric. Is there anything I should be aware of?

A Hood proof-er is what you need.... the best of the off-the-shelf ones is widely regarded as Renovo Ultra Proofer - i do mine with this every 2 years and it seems to work well.

Getting the best price is another question .... i paid about £20 for the large bottle at the Restoration or Triumph show last time.... i think i saw it at £21.50 on Sunday at Stoneleigh

Got to say I used Renovo recolour and reproofer on mine and wasn't impressed. The (black) colour leached inside and spoilt the brown interior, left overbrush marks on roof and reproofer just didn't work - leaked as before. Bought 5l of Fabseal from a well known high st camping shop and liberally dosed the canvas and well pleased, it stood 2 weeks of Cornwall camping without a drop cominmg in. Didn't hide the Renovo marks tho.

The Renovo plastic window rejuvinator is fantastic, a small bottle but removes the haze and even helps the fold marks - recommended.

maybe the fabric will swell now it has had a good soaking and stop weeping ? mine has and its brand new

I used Renovo waterproofer on a fairly badly leaking roof and it cured it. Looked like gnat's p**s as it went on so I weasn't optimistic, but it did the job brilliantly.

Trouble was, there were also several tears so I then went to Chris Vmad and got a new green hood which is fantastic. Very pleased with his work (no connection bla bla).

I used Autoglym polish on my rear window which also worked well.

Gent's I know this might sound suspect and I don't really have a need to water proof my hood just yet, as I bought a new one from VMAD.
However if and when I do need to water proof it I would use horse rug water proofer. My wife uses it on her canvas horse rugs once a year which are worn by the horses all winter and in all weather, it seems to do the trick and I believe is spray on. When I have seen her spray this stuff on it seems to bring back the colour and is deffo water proof and seems to dry in without leaving visible runs or discolouration. Just a thought, as this stuff is readily available at any equestrian product supplier
