    Electric Fan Installation

    Hello, Wondering if anyone can help???
    Recently got my Stag MkII, viscous coupling has gone, so removed and have purchased an electric fan 14 inch.
    Should I mount it engine side (engine then fan then radiator) or (engine then radiator then fan, behind grill)
    Also, what size and what length is the bolt required to hold timing pullys on???

    Hi Kev,
    Welcome to the forum.
    Which side you mount the fan depends on the fan you have bought. some are designed to "push" the air and this type should be mounted in front of the radiator, I beleive this is the most common type for Stags as most retain the original fan. The other type is designed to "pull" the air through and obviously these mount behind the radiator. To find out what you have connect up the wires to a battery and see which way the air moves. Make sure the fan is securely held as they are quite powerful. Its usually not wise to just reverse the connections to get the fan to go the other way as it will be a lot less efficient and its even possile that the bearings will fail as they will not be taking the thrust from the correct side.

    Sorry can't help with the length of the crank bolt.

      Welcome to the forum.

      As Roger says. The crank bolt needs to be short enough to tighten the crankshaft pulley without bottoming out. Not sure of the actual length, but deduct the thickness of the viscous coupling and you should be close.

        the crank bolt from a disassambled engine measures:

        total lenghth 103 mm, thread length 40mm, dia 15,8mm, 18TPI. Due to my thread list that should be a 5/8" UNF.

          If you are removing the mechanical fan, then the electric fan must be correctly rated for the engine size; see manufacturers guides (Kenlowe etc). Are you sure the 14-inch fan is adequate?

            Hi Kev. I have removed my viscous and fitted a 16" kenlowe in front of my rad so it pushes air through the rad, I don't know if 14" is big enough!! (ooh Matron!!)

              I was thinking that 14" seemed a bit small when I read it.

              Why are you not just replacing the Viscous coupling with a new one? (I have no electric fan at all in mine I took it off last year).

                    Although still not listed on their website, if you speak to Kenlowe they recommend their 14" Heavy Duty 2-speed fan for the Stag. There are several ways this can be wired up, but I have mine switched by a radiator thermo-switch straight onto high-speed should it ever be needed. Although it has only come on a couple of times in the 2 years it has been fitted, but it really shifts a lot of air when it does.
