    500 miles in 5 years

    Hello again,

Its me again. Went for a nice pub lunch today followed by a walk. The Stag was burbling along quite nicely for the 40 mile round trip now the misfire has been cured (touch wood!). Then suddenly we heard a noise that sounded like the prop shaft grinding against the tunnel just behind the gearbox which got much worse on right hand bends. So 5 miles from home I nursed it along and headed straight for the little independent garage that looks after the Mrs's car. Straight in and over the pit, but really couldnt see very much except the brake pipe and petrol pipe in the tunnel which seemed to be alarmingly close to the propshaft. Nothing seemed loose? Also noticed that the rubber boot over the handbrake linkage was disintegrating andone of the rubber hangers on the exhaust were knackered. So brake pipe was pulled though a bit away from the shaft, and then a test run produced no more noise. I suppose when we are both in the car the propshaft clearance will be reduced.

Mysun visor was very stiff, so stiff in fact that I found I was actually twisting the whole rod I decided, just another little problem.

A great body and quiet leak free engine is one thing, but 5 years is a long time. Even though this Stag was never driven in the wet and stored dry, I suspect that many of the rubber bits will have deteriorated. So, I will have to jack it up on axle stands and check everything out.

Any ideas on a list of check points, especially in respect of that noise?

    TIA

    Hi Al,

The rear gearbox mounts can collapse if they are very old, that would create a horrible noise eminating from the transmission tunnel.

If the car hasn't been used much for a long time, the tyres might need replacing. Anything over 10 years old should be replaced, although I have read 6 years is the max recommended age. Mine were 25 when I bought my Stag!:?

The viscous coupling is a common source of horrible noises. it should have no lateral play and when flicked around should turn less than 1/4 turn and show no sign of fluid loss.

I am sure forum members more knowledgable than me will have more suggestions but the latter two happened to me and the first one was suggested to me although my mounts were fine. I have had mine for 4 months and it is becoming more reliable with use.

Other than that, work your way through the maintainance list in the ROM and that should cover most things and give you a good check list.

      Hi Al,

It could be something as simple as the handbrake cable sagging, and touching the prop shaft. Try pulling up on the handbrake lever one notch when you drive it next, to see if the noise goes away. Don't drive around for too long with it up, though!

The Handbrake cable was the thing we noticed. We did pull it straight, away from the prop shaft. On a test run after the noise had gone so I am hoping that it was just that.
