Had a friend who's Mk1 stag would not start. On investigation I found that he had a 12 volt coil fitted, and was being run with a ballast. I bypassed the ballast then it tried to start, better but not quite. Finally I looked inside the dissy cap and, lo and behold, it was wet with water droplets. I knew then it would start straight away after we dried it out.
He asked me why it was wet, and I can only think that either garage is damp, and a cold night after a warm day could cause condensation. The other possibility is that there is a lot of moisture in the engine due to short runs. I suggested he got the car really warmed up for an hour, and hopefully it will not return.
Anyway, nice to see a smile on his face now.
