    problems with starting hot engine

    Hello everybody,

Last week I got the Stag out from her hibernating place. She started immediately when cold.

After I had driven her for a while and tried to start the engine when hot, this only worked with the choke half pulled.

I know that I have a slight flooding problem with obviously sticking needle valves on the Strombergs. So the carbs run (too?) rich.

    Can this be the reason?

If I manage to install the HIF6 carbs on Saturday, I might have solved all those problems. If they do not fit, I will at least replace the needle valves.

    Any advice is highly appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Dieter.

I used to have that problem with mine. I stripped and rebuilt the lot so I don't really know what the problem was, but my hunch is that this valve was sticking.

      Hi Dieter,

If pulling the choke out helps I doubt its flooding. The normal way to get round flooding is choke in and foot to the floor and crank until it clears. If pulling the choke out when hot helps its sounds more like its miles too weak. Maybe if you have a flooding problem, it means you have had to weaken the mixture to get it to run right and then when its hot its too weak despite the slight leak. It could also be you have a major air leak which is weakening the mixture despite the slight leak and this would possibly have more of an affect when its hot than when its cold and needing full choke anyway.

Hope thats helps in some way.

      Kind regards
      Ian

Hi Dieter, I agree with Dave, it could be the idle valve. It could also be fuel vaporisation, using choke would make up for the gassed fuel so the symptoms fit. Doesn't sound very likely in your climate, but check your fuel pipes don't pass close to anything hot, if yours is a Mk 1, they originally did, if so, move the fuel pipe up to the turret top, then straight across to the cam cover. Hello,

I forgot to mention that my engine consumes about 22-23 ltrs. per 60 mls. This makes me think, too, that my carbs run to rich.

          Kind regards,
          Dieter.
