Hiya, Wards do the conversion, the later Jag box is superior, Mick was telling me that the earlier one was constantly hunting up and down at lower speeds and driving him nuts. Martin.

Martin. When you say later box, what year onwards should we be looking at?.

Sorry mate I can't help you with that. It's a bit too far from original for me, though it's a worthy conversion. Give them a buzz ! Martin.

Probably the biggest improvement you can make to an auto. Clive Tate will fit it for you himself for relatively little money. I fitted my own as I'm sure you will with all the other work you are doing to your Stag, if you fit it to the engine & put it in the car as one unit, it's quite straight forward.
As I understood it the one that is available is getting harder to source now and Clive is playing with the next generation with the paddles.

I was under the impression that Wards supply and fit Clive Tate's conversions anyway, hence the name 'Tate and Lewis'.

The name Tate & Lewis comes from Clive Tate and Russell Lewis who developed this conversion many years ago, they have sold them all over Europe...We had one fitted about 10 years ago and in my opinion it's one of the best conversions that we have ever done.............Our car is fitted with a 3.45 diff and with there box we get 30 MPH per 1,000 rpm
so 3000 RPM gives us 90 mph, normal cruising 70 MPH just 2500rpm.......Foot hard to the floor it goes into lock up around 5400rpm and thats indicating 110mph..Driven carefully on a run we can get 32mpg.

I'd try one first, there are pros and cons, but if you've got to replace its the way to go. All the pros mentioned above + 10% fuel saving, the cons, be prepared to use all the gears and kickdown, with the BW at 60-70, the engine was on cam and acceleration was good for overtaking, the ZF needs to be kicked down for any power. I found towing at 60 a pain, the slightest hill and speed stopped, came out of lockup at 55 so was constantly up and down. My biggest complaint is full bore overtaking at 70(ish) in 3rd, slight power off and immediately bangs into top and lockup - a thump in the back and a loss of 1500revs, not good for driveline. The only other thing is...watch your license, 80+ is sheer delight now!

Clive fitted mine and i agree it is the best thing i have done to the car - great motorway cruiser with 70mph at 2,500 Revs.
Kick down is good and will a little fiddling with the kick down you can ensure it does not go into lock up to early.

If you know them well, can you tell them that if they bring one out to Tenerife and fit it to my Stag they can have a free holiday week in our rental apartment for life.
Bet nobody else offers a free "timeshare"!

PS. When I went across to my local tonight for my usual pint, there was a new black Mustang convertible in the Garage below so I couldn't resist having a peek. Very dissappointed with the interior - not a patch on the Stag - and according to the mechanic whose doing some work on it - the car's a load of rubbish!

It is virtually brand new - but I didn't have a camera with me - if it's still there tomorrow I will take and post a pic.
I looked at the rear but it didn't state which engine it had in it and I didn't open the bonnet.
There was no one around in the garage when I popped in and the ignition key had been left on the drivers seat.
It would have taken me less than a minute to have reversed it out and driven it away - just asking to be pinched, but maybe that was what the owner wanted?

I only found out in the Bar later that the mechanic had said it was a load of c**p.
