29.5 MPG is this a record?

    Hello Everyone,
Some time ago, VMad fitted a Weber conversion on my car.
I was then asked what improvement, if any I achieved in MPG.
At the time, I hadn't bothered to check it, so I wasn't able to respond to the requests.
However, I'm now more focused on fuel costs (I can't think why!); and on a recent trip to Wales, I decided to record the mileage and fuel used. I complied with round town speed limits and also stuck at a steady 70 mph on the motorways.
Not that I wouldn't have anyway. None of us would dream of speeding - would we?
The car returned a MPG of 29.41. Since then, on more normal journeys I've been getting in excess of 28mpg.
The Stag is my daily driver; and although the mpg is nothing compared to a modern car; I'd rather be in the Stag and paying a little more.
    Regards,
    Frank

Wow Frank! I wish mine would do that!! I am lucky to get 25mpg and in daily use get nearer 23ish - I have the standard Stromberg set up and she is tuned correctly and runs like a dream. Hooning it to 5000 rpm through the gears may not help though

I too would rather be paying a little more and drive the Stag, the pleasure I get from it every day is immense, especially on days like today when I drove home from work with the hood down

Drive a Stag every day... it's wonderful!

Frank, you are doing well and I achieve these figures with a 30mpg on a very ling journey with kids in the back and a wife and handbag in the front. I think it only makes a difference if you have a manual gearbox. Stromberg's when set up and topped can return an excellent return and around town, it wont drop below 24mpg

I agree, I don't think twice about paying more when driving the Stag.

          Hi Bruce,
Mine's a manual. I think it's got the standard diff in it, but I'm not sure.

Wow...that sort of mpg is far more than I would have thought but it does depend so much on the route you normally drive and the amount of stop / starting.

Naturally I have no idea what mine does.......it's more a question of bdpm (break-downs per mile), but I am not expecting it to top 25 from the Rover 3.5 and 4 barrel Weber.

The M3 has averaged at 22.8mpg in the 2.5 years I have had it (my previous one did the same over 4 years). Now that fuel is where it is though, over the last 3 weeks, I have tried to be more economic in my driving and have been averaging 24.4mpg which I am pleased with.

              Impressive stuff!

My Stag when it was BW35 auto and on a hoon back from 24 Heures du Mans drank at a smidge over 17.5mpg. More recently and with a Man O/D (J-Type) and a similar Ferry rush I got 22.5.

I must admit that I was pretty impressed as the more recent trip the car was out of tune but driven just as fast and yet was still 5mpg better.

I really must adapt the driving style and see what it'll do. Maybe we should go for one of those 1950's style reliability trials to see who can get the furthest on a tank of fuel without breaking down.
Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

Its worth playing with the Stromberg's as you can get better than that as they are excellent when set and then leave alone. Driving technique, yes is a factor, but I boot mine now and then and on a long run, it doesn't make much difference, its just cutting back on the stop starts around town.

I've just fitted Vmad's weber and I'm highly delighted. I've not done any mileage checks yet but the car runs like a dream. I'm not trying to say which is best strombergs or weber but the weber is definitely better FOR ME. I say this because I've neither the knowledge or equipment to tune the strombergs whereas the weber is so easy, just 3 screws and you're away. Also IMHO you do away with all the stromberg plumbing that was a very confusing to someone like myself. It also allows you to remove the cold air intake duct which I believe lets more air around the engine for cooling. As I say I'm not dissing the strombergs but the weber has given me confidence to adjust the carb which I couldn't do with the stombergs, neither by the way could any of my local garages. It seems to be a disappearing art. Terry
