That's funny, you can usually open a Stag with a teaspoon ! Have you tried that ? Try a Stag expert or the AA / RAC, they often have spare keys. Drilling it out need not be a disaster, get the old barrel out and replace it with yours. Martin.

          Hi Steve

If you look at the back of the cap you can drift out the pin that the lock latches on too.
Then take the circlip off the end of the barrel and the cylinder should come out.

If you want to make your key fit:
With the cylinder out of the barrel, put your key in and several brass leaves will stick out, file them off flush (MAKE SURE THE KEY IS IN THE CYLINDER WHEN YOU FILE) if it's not you will be able to open it with a lolly stick.
Put it back in the barrel and your key will open and lock it.
I did it on mine when I bought a new cap with no key.

          Cheers
          Steve

Steve, I've just rebuilt one cap from two others - my original one had a nail instead of the bar the catch clips on to! The original also had a problem with the lock barrel pulling out of the cap as the circlip on the end was pushed in too far so it was flush with the barrel and not retaining it as I pulled the key out. Having taken my spare cap apart, it also looks like there was nothing stopping the circlip on that one being pushed all the way in to the same position apart from years of accumulated crud. I've reassembled my 'good' cap by carefully not pushing the circlip all the way on, but I would be happier if there was some more positve way of locating it, have you any suggestions?
              Thanks,
              John.

                Hi John
I seem to remember there should be a thin washer which goes on the cylinder before the circlip. It's only a couple of thou thick, but it stops the cylinder coming out. You could probably make one out of the lid of a paint spray can.
The photo is for the door lock.
                Cheers

Hi Steve, Do you mean the black horseshoe (or I suppose circlip) shaped part at the bottom of the photo, if so, does it get jammed into the same groove as the circlip? - neither of the caps I had looked like they had anything resembling that, but perhaps it comes out and gets lost easily.
                  Thanks,
                  John.

I think the photo might be a bit misleading.
An ordinary washer will do, as long as it's big enough to fit over the end of the key cylinder (behind your circlip, not in the groove) and the outside diameter of the washer needs to be larger than the hole in the barrel so the cylinder won't pull out.
I'll try to get a photo tomorrow to show what I mean.
                    Steve

Don't know what stops the circlip from going fully onto the barrel and allowing the washer to fall off into the fuel tank. The circlip does have a small prong pointing inwards, but this lines up with a small hole in the lock barrel. I was thinking that if I carefully filled the small hole with araldite that might stop the circlip pushing all the way on and ending up flush with the cylinder.
                      John.

                        Hi John

I lied about the washer sorry. There's not one on mine.
It's just held in by the circlip which is the rusty gold bit in the picture. It just stands proud enough to stop the cylinder from coming out.

                        Cheers

Yep, that's just the same as mine except that my circlip tends to migrate inwards so that it's flush with the cylinder.
