Spin on Oil Filter Conversion MUST READ THIS!

If your thinking of fitting Spin on Oil Filter Conversion youll note the many posts with people having problems with the filter only screwing a couple of threads on the adaptor - i had the same problem but what nobody seems to have realised is the fitting instructions dont make you aware of the likleihood that when you remove the old filter the large outer seal can stay lodged in its groove without you realising and because the kit comes with one of these seals and the instructions tells you to fit it you inadvertently have 2 seals fitted on top of each other ! that is the reason you dont have enough thread left to screw the filter on!!!

CHECK BEFORE FITTING THE FILTER OUTER O RING THAT THE OLD O RING IS NOT ALREADY STILL IN SITU!

Why do so many people convert to the spin on filter? I still have the original canister and paper element jobby and it's never given me any trouble.

it is cleaner and easier to change and also I like to fill it up with oil when I fit it so that I do not starve the engine of oil when you first start up, the original does the same job though

I also use the original canister and paper type element and I don't intend to convert. I also kept the original I had on my TR7 and always found it easy enough to work with. It is also actually easier to 1/2 fill the original type of filter with new oil prior to starting up, you don't have to try and pour the oil through the wee threaded hole in the top.

I know of two people who have had them fall off.

I went the spin on adapter option and had nothing but agro. Every time that I needed to change the filter I ended up stabbing it with a screwdriver to get it moving and then it loosened the adapter but not so I'd notice. I then refit the new cannister and 10 miles later the sump is emptying past the now loose adapter! that on top of questionable seal on the inner o-ring to prevent oil bypassing the filter and I threw in the towel.

I have been back with the original paper filter since, I rarely get oil up my arms as I did when stabbing the canister, I can happily half fill the paper filter with 20/50 before spinning it back on and at least I know that the damn thing is tight. I always disconnect LT lead from coil on startup to get the oil pressure up after a change anyway.

The only issues with the paper filter and bowl are that you need to be sure that all the springs and bits are in the bowl else the filter will flap around in the bottom and your oil goes unfiltered. Also and the reason I embarked on the adapter route in the first place - I found it easy to get the filter bowl tightened up but as it wasn't properly in the groove and up agaisnt the oil seal it did drop a fait bit of oil until noticed! Now I just make sure that there is spring in the bowl while I do up the 9/16th bolt and rotate the bowl as it goes on - absolutley failsafe.

I've just fitted a spin on conversion, so will how it fares.

I won't throw out the old canister just yet then.

I fitted the spin-on conversion 6 years ago, it's never leaked, no hassle at all. Filter wrenches are cheap enough, and the whole process takes half the time. With all due respect to all concerned, if it leaks you probably didn't fit it properly (quickly duck) Martin.

                      Joking!

and point taken. But I tried thread lock and tightening the adapter as tight as I dared without cracking it. My cheap filter wrench didn't fit into the space available, there are other less cheap filter removers that might (but not available to me at the time) or the age old stab the ******* with a screwdriver method.

Twice after refitting the filter did it start leaking at the adapter - engine block union. Resulting in me trashing a new oil filter to get to tighten the adapter back up again.

To be honest I really couldn't be arsed with the blasted thing eny more and went back to tried and tested cannister and paper filter

The adapter and cartridge does still appeal to me but with the agro I had first time round I shant bother again.

to each his own I guess,

p.s. I was also guided by rumours at the time of quality issues! Both outer edge and inner o-ring of the adapter must seal to prevent oil leak or worse still oil filter bypass. There was all manner of fancy tricks involving string and such like to check that the inner o-ring sealed properly. To be frank the Stags engine already has enough design issues (aledgedly) and for me to introduce another seemed daft.

Later spin on adaptors have a moving centre to get round the problem of the inner seal not seating on the block. All three of my stag engines have spin on adaptors, the one in the TR also having an oil cooler take off with integral thermostat. I have never had any problems when changing filters, though having said that, trouble has just been invited!
