As part of a restoration of my Mk1 Stag I have stripped out and am now repainting the boot area. Removing old paint has revealed black mastic, apparently used as a seam sealer. New paint applied to these areas cracks and flakes. Presumably I need some sort of isolator; can anybody advise of a suitable product?

A good seam sealershould not sink or crack, so maybe best to remove as much of yours as you can and redo with some proper stuff which can be painted over when dried. Frost http://www.frost.co.uk/have a good range of products for this type of job

Thanks seaside bill. However, it's not the original mastic seam sealer that's cracking, it's the paint I'm putting on top. Triumph clearly didn't have this problem with the mastic/paint combination they used.I would rather find something that I can paint on to theoriginalmastic rather thango through the grief of removing it all, not least because I'm going to face the same issue when I paint the cockpit area. Is it likely that one of the Frost products would fit the bill? Another seam sealer perhaps?

Their brushable seam sealermay do the job, butit could also react with the seam sealer you've already got, particularly if a previous owner hasused household type mastic filler? Rather than spoil your paint job, I'd be inclinded to remove at least some of the filler and top it over with proper stuff, so at least the paint sits on that.

Thanks seaside bill; I'll look into the Frost seam sealer situation. The black mastic is Trumph production original (definitely not a later application of a household product) so I don't need to remove the mastic unless what the factory used to overpaint it, or an equivalent, is no longer available. Unlikely I think.
