Good question Graham. You can, I think, buy a reconditioned one for about £120 but I am not sure how good they are. Alternatively heavy duty ones new are about £200.00. I just had mine reconditioned. Not sure how hard they are to swap over as the garage is doing mine, but it doesn't look that hard from the ROM.
Is it an easy job to replace a starter motor and which should I buy?
It for a mk11 and has electronic ignition. Any advice would be appreciated.

When I changed mine I opted for the high torque Starter Motor from Rimmers. Like others have said getting at the nut is awkward and you need a long extension on a socket set to reach it from the front of the engine bay. By the way the high torque starter is a lot smaller and lighter than the original starter.
I saw those on rimmers site, seem a bit expensive. Whats the benefit?
For me it was a lot easier and lighter to carry it out to Tenerife in my suitcase , but to be honest I have had no trouble with it since fitting it quite a few years ago. I don't think it was very expensive when I bought mine - but they may have increased in value considerably since then - I don't know, I usually use Paddocks as my Supplier, but they didn't do the high torque one so had to go to Rimmers for it.

A guy in the Dolomite club did some research and testing of these new motors some years ago, on a Dolly Sprint, but the principle should be the same. From what I remember there was not a great deal of difference in cranking speed compared to the original starter motor if the battery was good, but he found that the car would still start easily with a nearly flat battery as the current draw, and hence the voltage drop was far less than with the original starter, so it still left enough volts for the ignition to produce a spark.

Can the starter motor be removed without removing the exhaust front pipe?

As Ian has said, yes.
I've done mine recently and used a 3/8" drive socket with two long extensions so that the ratchet was out at the front of the engine. In fact, to crack it off, I used a breaker bar first and then the ratchet.
