Seat belt mechanism

I wonder if anyone can tell me about the seatbelt mechanism please.
I have opened up the unit and have worked out that there is a spring inside the shaft, on the end of which, is the locking mechanism.
I reckon the spring has become weak and needs to be replaced, but I can't work out how to get at it. Anyboby done this before ?
And,
What is that funny plastic whatsit on the side with a little brass duffer inside?

Hi Tim

I would be surprised if the spring needs replacing as it has a very low compression set anyway - the "Brass Duffer" is the inertia pendulum, basically when you stop that keeps moving and locks the seat belt mechanism.

Unless you mean the belt retraction spring (This looks like a big watch spring) ?
