Inuendo: I'm going to tear myself a new one...hole that is.

I've removed the access plate on the side of the gearbox tunnel and have found, as has been mentioned on here before, that the plate gives access to nothing on a manual gearbox. I'm considering cutting a new hole to give me access to the gearbox filler plug. Has any one else done this?

I would have thought it would be more hassle pulling up the carpets to get at the filler plug that it would be to pop it up on ramps and get at it from underneath!? Plus you risk
      dripping oil on your carpets.

You will need some kind of pressure oil-can to fill from underneath. You wont be able to squeeze much more than half the oil from a plastic container.
Cant remember who gave me the tip on this forum. Thread a length of clean hosepipe down the back of the engine and round to the gearbox filler. Stick a small funnel in the upper end of the pipe and add oil in small quantities till you get an overflow into the strategically placed basin.

I'm sure I managed to top mine up from underneath using a castrol 1 litre plastic bottle. I must have started with a full bottle. I suppose you could use two bottles and keep topping one up so you have a full one to squeeze into the gearbox hole!

I remember doing the job on my old mk1 Triumph 2000 years ago, feeding the oil from below, same useless access panel. No, I was just thinking about easing the access to the plug and doing away with the need for ramps etc.

Not done it this way but what i use is a sump pump, didnt cost much, its a small manual plunger oil pump usually used for draining engine oil from boat inboards. the suction side normally goes down the dipstick tube but i put this in the oil bottle and the output into the fill hole, works really well and if you extend the pipes it can be done from the side of the car.
