Possibly the daftest question asked on the forum

Hi Guys,

Received my fuel cut out switch won from ebay am going to fit today, simplistic enough even for my limited electrical savvy.

My question is does the top button when fitted remain depressed or is it pulled out

Rob,
The button should be depressed. The unit should be mounted 'button upmost' and it works when a ball bearing inside the unit jumps upwards in a crash and moves the button upwards. There is a brass collar around the spindle (of which the button is the top part) that makes electrical contact when the button is down. When raised, this contact is broken and the fuel pump stops.

I fiddled with the switch on my first stag 27 years ago not having a clue what it was ,then drove off, "broke down" half a mile down the road, pushed it back to my house (not the easiest of things to do, even at 21).Had another fiddle with things including this strange cylinder thing again and low and behold a loud ticking noise followed by me feeling like a bit of a twit.There is nothing like learing by your own mistakes.

I did almost exactly the same thing with my first one in 1985. Only made it 50 yards though!
You were lucky having a Stag at 21 years old. I was 24 and somehow managed to take out a 3 grand loan. Think the insurance was £250. All my money went into that car.....

Lucky or Mad,insurance was £1200pa back then so I took out 3 months insurance and sold it when it ran out then took 22 years to get to a place where I can really have one.

When my Stag came back after a respray the garage said that they had to rewire the petrol pump as it didn't work. I disconnected their wire & pushed the button. Hey Presto! They were amazed!

I paid ten Quid a bit tatty but as its 35-40years old not bad it works though which is a result.
