    fuel comsumption

    Hi
I've just filled the car up to the filler neck so I am pretty sure of my last fuel consumption.

    20.2 mpg...that was over 146 miles of mixed A road and motorway(averaging 65 ish)

I know I've had better than this ..nearer 25 about 2 to 3 years ago so I'd appreciate some views on where I should start checking/adjusting etc.

Initially I thought a carb rebuild but since the MOT showed figures of CO2 2.91 and HC 188 people are telling me to leave well alone.

I'm just off for a "Drive it Day" drive so might be able to report some more figures later.

    All ideas gratefully accepted

    Regards

    Dave

(sorry I can spell consumption but it won't let me edit)

      Hi John

Yes I suppose that may improve things but I'm convinced I should get more with the set up I've got

      Any other ideas anyone?

        Hi Dave

Since getting my resto on the road I have been monitoring the MPG closely:-

first 170 miles inc Forum New Years Day run and lots of local round town stuff : 22mpg
177 mile Forum run to Lake Vyrnwy : 25mpg
        150 mile charge down motorway at 75 to 85mph : 28mpg

Also went on a 120mile it Drive it Day run yesterday which was potter as sub 60mph so the econony should be 30+. Will know tomorrow when I top her up again.

        Sound okay?

        regards

        Bruce

HI Bruce...yes brilliant, especially if you can get 30. I'd be happy with 25. Maybe new plugs...check timing...clean any gum and crap out of the carbs????????

          Cheers

I've been consistently getting around 23mpg, however last two fill-ups I've used Super Unleaded and although it feels more responsive, consumption seems to to be worse around 20mpg; maybe it's the sunshine / top down / feelgood driving that helps

Filled mine up yesterday, and last tank worked out at 26mpg.

Paid visit to Russ a couple of weeks ago to have the carbs tuned. I am very pleased with the results.

tuned mine and she is averaging about the 24 mark at a constant 60. i'm sure i would be better if i didnt give a small blast now and again just drove back from Notts today a steady 80 for about 4 miles on the dual carriage way felt good

Had my carbs cleaned and set last Friday. No big problems appart from the vacume advance being knackered. The guy who did the work on the carbs said that this would deffo effect the MPG. Maybe worth checking vacume advance, although I am not an expert on the Stag carb

Thanks Mike, will certainly check that one out...IIRC there's a thread on here somewhere about testing it

                          Hi Dave

Following on with this thread, here are the results from our 250 mile journey home on Saturday:-

Huntingdon - Gloucester via Coventry and Stratford upon Avon

                          138 miles @ 29.8mpg

Gloucester to Crewe, straight up M5 and M6 @ 70mph plus a few miles locally whilst testing out the replacement diff

                          115 miles @ 26mpg

Things should improve further now that I have replaced the 3.7 diff with a 3.45.

                          Regards

                          Bruce

                            Hi Bruce
                            Thanks for that.... I'm jealous
I haven't done a decent run since Drive it Day. However this weekend....changed the plugs, fitted new air filter, fitted new fuel filter, took the tops off the carbs and gave a liberal dosing of carb cleaner then ran it and introduced some more down the elbows. Next on the list is a catching rear brake drum. Then I'll have a run out and check consumption again.

Still got to borrow a vacuum gauge and test the advance mechanism but I suspect it's working

                            Regards

Just had a run down to south and averaged 23 with pretty mixed driving, mostly gentle but some city and also some high speed blasting with the top down.

I guess i could get it to 25+ if i drove like the old fart that I am, but with sports exhaust and holley carb, the car just begs to be let go and the sound is fabulous. But fact is that gets me only around 15 then.... Oh well, have a diesel Fiesta too so it all balances out!

                              Cheers
