    SU carbs problems

Guys - having problems with my SUs.
Firstly, I cannot keep the dashpot oil to the correct level (basically I fill with 20 / 50 and 10 mins later the oil has disappeared (without even running the engine). When I then start the engine there is lots of blue smoke (which doesn't happen if I haven't put oil in the dashpots)
Please could someone advise me of what I have to replace / repair in the SU s to stop this "immediate" loss of dashpot oil into th cylinder bores, many thanks
Secondly, when on a run I have noticed on the "overrun" I get numerous backfires and exhaust popping (not when accelerating, only when in backing off/overrun situations) Is there a chance that this might be related to the lack of oil in the dashpots, i.e. under acceleration the mixture is ok but when backing off / on overrun the SU pistons don't move quickly enough for the reduction in engine revs etc - any help with these two situations would be very welcome, thanks

    Kind Regards
    Ian

    Hello Ian,

What type of SU carbs did you build in?

    Kind regards,
    Dieter.

Dieter - they were fitted by the previous owner - I think they are 2 x HF 16 Type, although not sure if I have the numbers right ??, thanks

        SU Carbs

        Hello Ian,

normally there are little tags fitted to the screws holding the domes. What do they say? Pics would be very helpful,Stag HIF6 1.jpg too.

Personally I reckon you have HIF6 carbs installed. I will attache a picture of the ones in my Stag.

        Best wishes,
        Dieter - from Germany.Stag HIF6 2.jpg

          Ian,

You could try contacting Burlen Fuel Systems - who took over all SU carb manufacturing and support. They may be able to advise you. Check the carbs for the numbers Dieter suggests; they'll be necessary for Burlen to help you.

By the way, Burlen's web site gives details of these numbers against applications. I would suspect you have a set of Rover SD1 V8 carbs HIF16's. The Burlen web site also tells you how to service the carbs.

          Hope this helps.

Thanks Peter - I will try the Burlen route - apologies, I should have put in first post that mine is an RV8 in the Stag, so the HIF 16 could be the ones, thanks.

Dieter - great photo - you're installation is a lot neater + they do look very similar to mine, main difference is mine has K&N cone type filters (not the "pancake" type you have) The only numbers I have found on one carb are (on a small ally tab screwed to the side of dashpot) is:FZX1316L-1-W17.

            Thanks both of you again

            Kind Regards
            Ian

              Hello Ian,

So your carbs are the ones from the Rover SD1: SU HIF6 (not 16!). You can get parts from Rimmers, too. See here: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-FZX1316L

              Good luck!
