Can anyone tell me where the bellhousing dowel bolts are located please? I have had the gearbox off today to try and cure my notchy clutch, but everyting seems fine and I cannot find anything wrong so I guess it must be an alignment issue.
Hi Brian
I would suspect the pressure plate that may be dry. Look inside and see if you can see metallic dust or rust. If this is not lubricated well enough, the clutch will be notchy when hot. Laycock ended up not applying enough grease etc and many had to be refitted and there are plenty out there still for sale at shows.
Brian,
the dowel bolt holes are at approx 11 o'clock and 2 o'clock, looking from the rear towards the front of box / car. I think the common replacement is a 3/8" bolt in these two holes (most of the others are 5/16") and these 3/8 bolts are a tight fit in those holes. There are also a couple of 3/8 bolts used on the right above and below the unused starter motor position, but these are a normal clearance fit. It is possible with a bit of staring at the box to see the two slightly larger diameter 'dowel' holes and you can confirm that you've got the right ones by putting a standard 5/16 bolt in and comparing the amount that you can wiggle it around compared with the regular, smaller 5/16 clearance holes.
John.
ps what does the bush in the tail of the crank that the nose of the g/box input shaft sits in look like? On my old one you could see that the crank and input shaft must have been out of alignment.

Have you looked carefully at the thrust bearing carrier where the fork presses on it? There is nearly always a groove where the pins sit, and as the fork makes a wiping action across the back of the bearing carrier, this can cause a notchy clutch. Unless your bellhousing bolts were loose I would have thought it unlikely that alignment was an issue, but with the mileage you do wear is likely to be

If you do a search in the archive you will find an old posting from me dating back to Jan/Feb 2010 where I asked the same question and listed where I thought each bolt fitted on the gearbox bellhousing. That should assist you. Sorry can't me more specific at the moment but viewing this on somebody elses computer.
Many thanks for the help and advice. I found the dowel bolts. Well, I had the box off and the splines were a bit grotty so I have cleaned and lightly greased them. The release bearing carrier is very smooth in operation and I cannot find any significant wear and the cross shaft bushes are good. I have it all back together and have just warmed up the engine. So far I have a lovely smooth and progressive clutch!!
Only had it hot in the garage up to now, but fingers crossed!!!
