Petrol tank woes!

Why does my Stag have to fight me all the way? I was/am looking forward to a nice long drive from Kent to Devon in the Stag and sods law, the petrol tank has decided to spring a leak. I am not happy!.

I have a couple of questions,

Firstly I have attempted a temporary repair by fibreglassing the bottom of the tank this evening. It is currently perched on its side in the boot! - is the fibreglass likely to hold for a while, or will petrol disolve it in a few hours? I am hoping to reassemble it tomorrow evening and head down to Devon as planned if at all possible.

I have ordered a new tank, would it be sensible to use the POR15 Fuel tank sealer to make it ethanol friendly, or is the inside of replacement tanks coated with something suitable anyway?

I doubt the new tank is coated with anything - I assume it is a steel one

Hiya Dave, if you've done a reasonably thorough job, the resin repair will last forever, or until the rust spreads to somewhere else. It may be worth using one of the ethanol proofers, but I'm waiting for the results of the FBHVC tests before I lash out, you can always add it at a later date, after all, your tank has lasted 35 years so far, a few months means nothing. Martin - The whole bottom of the tank is very rusty so I am going to replace it for peace of mind. The resin repair looks ok, but the fibreglass resin and hardener were very old. It only needs to last until my new tank arrives. - Job for the royal wedding day me thinks!

Stewart - that is a very generous offer, but I shall politely decline. It seems a bit drastic to borrow someone's petrol tank for the weekend!
