    steering rack gaiters

ive got to replace the steering rack gaiter mot failure

is there enough adjustment in the rack to remove the track rod end from the steering rack but still leave the track rod end in place

    Dave,
I'd think so. If you look at the angle of the front wheel on full lock and imagine each side turned that amount so you've got a massive amount of toe-out, the lenght of thread in the track rod end must be less than that.

      Hi Dave,

I replaced my rack gaiters a few weeks ago. Why do you want to leave the track rod end in place? When I did mine, I removed the track rod ends - it's a doddle with a ball joint splitter.

Having detached the track rod end from the steering arm, I slackened off the locknut exactly half a turn as well as carefully counted the exact number of turns needed to remove the track rod end. Replaced the gaiter then screwed the TRE back on the same number of turns and a half turn of the locknut was just right so I hadn't disturbed my tracking at all.

All done in about fifteen minutes a side.

      Cheers

      Julian
