The first 1,200 miles since the resto

    Hi All

As the regulars amongst you will know my resto finally went on back the road last Christmas. Well, we have just returned from a family holiday in the UK and the Stag was used as our means of transport. During the week 750 miles were racked up, 250 of which were yesterday on the hottest day of the year so far. During that journey home we notched up 1,200 miles since the resto.

During those first 1,200 miles the car has not failed to start or broken down once However, a few jobs have arisen:-

    whining diff to be replaced
    handbrake requires adjustment
windscreen wipers having a fit (see seperate posting from yesterday)
    parcel shelf collapsed

If somebody had offered me that list to me during those long 2.5 years of hard graft I would have bitten their hand off.

    Regards

    Bruce (happy with his Stag)

    Well done Bruce,

I reckon that's a direct result of the care, effort and diligence you put in to your resto

    Cheers

Well done Bruce, you will be rivalling me for mileage soon This proves the wisdom of doing a good job in the first place.

                Hi Guys

Thanks for the positive comments. Hopefully it will encourage people to have a go and do more work themselves. Two other things I missed off the list are:-

                • spent five minutes tightening the Power Steering belt. It stretched a bit and started to squeal when on full lock

                • take off the Power Steering hoses and have another go at adjusting them so they do not foul the lower steering knuckle. After I spotted this on holiday the short term fix for this was to wedge a piece of wood between them and the wing, to raise them upwards.

                Cheerio

                Bruce

Am I the only person to fit a new PAS belts and find that even when adjusted as tight as possible it is still a bit slack.

I've found the same on two belts and two pumps

                  Cheers

                    Hi Julian

I agree that they always look a bit lack when compared with the alternator belt. After a 1,000 miles mine stretched and had about 2 inches of movement in the middle when pressed with a finger. It tightened up again to about an inch and the squeeling on full lock has ceased.

                        Thanks Dave

I did ask, but two suppliers said that there has only ever been one type fitted.

                        Cheers

Maybe for the Stag, but there are lots of other cars out there which might have the same cross section belt in a different length. Maybe a visit to the catalogue at the local motor factors?
                          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

                            Julian,

The belt quoted for the Stag is GFB11113. This indicates 1113mm internal length. Due to different manufacturers tolerances you may find the ones you are getting are a bit longer than that. You could, as Drew says, go to a motor factors with the belt you have and get one slightly shorter, or one that is actually that length. ISTR that the Stag belt is 10mm wide. It was originally specified as a GFB, which is flat. But you could try a GCB which is a 'cogged' belt. Either will do.

Sure Drew, I know I can.

In fact, I've fitted a new belt and adjusted it to the maximum and it's ok - no squeal etc. However, if it does stretch at all with time I've got no more adjustment left.

I just wondered if I was the only person to find this

                              Cheers

Just seen your latest comment Dave - thanks for that although, as you can see above, I'm ok for now.
