Suspension Rebuild

Greetings all,

This is my first post on the new site, my old profile with all my previous posts seems to have disappeared. and I have been here since 2008.

I need to update my Suspension it feels so tired and saggy. The front of the car sits to high. I have called two garages today, one said if they do all the bushes it will be around £500
The other one quoted a full suspension build at £1600 + vat, both garages are Stag specialist. is this the going rate?

Hi Dave, welcome back

£1600 + is extortionate in my opinion. It is time consuming but there are not that many parts to change. I have just done a full front rebuild on a Triumph 2000 which is identical to the in a day and a half, only because I needed and over night part. Why don't you have a go yourself as it will save you a packet. All parts would be around £300 inc standard shocks and springs etc and Paddocks do spring / shock kits etc.

Hi Dave

I agree with Andrew.. have done all round with polybushers/new springs/SPAX shocks from rimmers... you will need spring compressers, to swap over the springs, other than that fairly straight forward, just soak nuts/bolts for a few days before working on them

Dave I did my rear suspension 2 x winters ago and did my front last month. It's not a big deal and I'm no mechanic. 1600 Quid is ridiculous. The Stag suspension set up is not rocket science. The guys on here were a big help especially Julian who undertook his just before I did.

Please feel free to ask for advice if you do it, I'm sure you'll get lots of help on here.

Welcome back to the forum ! I just wish you lived closer as I'd offer to do it for considerably less than £1600

i agree with the comments about the job not being particularly difficult or time-consuming to do, i would expect it to take a long day, or 2 days if starting late/finishing early.

The parts for the job should be (as Andrew mentioned) about £300, that leaves £1300 labour cost - they probably estimate at 2 day max for the job, so £650 per day - £81/hr for an 8hr day.

Is that a fair price ? that depends on the going rate in your area ........ personally, if i was paying that kind of hourly rate i'd expect the experience i was paying for to get the job done in less than 2 days.

I cant do any of the work myself, the car is sitting in a underground car park in central London and the management will not allow
repairs on site. I might give V mad a call, he fitted one of his carbs last year, couldn't believe it was the same car afterwards.

A friend of mine got a quote from Faveshams about two weeks ago and they quoted him £1000 + vat, so not sure how they get to £1600. The quote for the back was £800, so maybe your quote includes both ends. Yes, they do do any excellent job in my opinion and are very enthusiastic. Its rare nowadays to get a Stag only garage.

Ah , then in that case, that is reasonable as that is really the complete underside of the car. Time consuming.

I would like to help, but I have just started a big job on a stag I bought (see my other post on unfinished project) so I am going to be fully occupied at least until the autmumn. Can it wait until then?
