when you did the right hand one did you tap a thread in as well

Not quite sure what you mean but I only did the left hand one and all the bolts came out easily, if a bit fiddly to get at, and then went back in ok. All the threads were ok.

tap the end of water transfer housing to have water going to the back of both heads

Ah ha ! Gettit now.
No I didn't. It's only since I removed / refitted mine that I even heard of this idea. Sounds like a pretty good idea to me however, so far (as he crosses his fingers ), I've not had any overheating problems so I think I'll leave it alone for now ! Knowing my luck, if I did that I'd disrupt the flow of water and end up having problems
Btw, Having looked at an engine pic just now, I'm not sure which of the heads is closer to the bulkhead but I'm still sure that both housings will come off reasonably ok.
