Main beam and dip works intermitantly

Gent's the wife and I went for a run this evening and by the time we got back it was dark. Put the lights on and noticed that the main beam would not come on, although the flash worked.
Klicked the indicator stalk a half dozen times and bingo on the came and worked. Any ideas what may be causing this and will it be an easy fix. I think it may just be a dirty dip switch. Has'nt been used for a while.

Ok guys went for another late evening spin again. Bugger it started again but after a few clicks it works ok. How do you access this. Do you have to remove the platic cowling from around the stearing. Might have a closer look tomorrow and clean and lubricate. MOT due in June so don'y want a failk for something like this

Yep, you do have to remove the cowling, but it's a doddle.

Underneath the cowling you'll see two deep holes pointing upwards with phillips screws at the end of them - usually you can unscrew them without looking. Once those are out then the top part of the cowling lifts off - it'll have the headlight switch and wiring still attached but that's not a problem.

If you want to remove the bottom cowling there's another short screw underneath.

The stalks themselves can then be taken off if you want - one screws to the column housing and the other screws in to the first one (easy when you see it)

Having said that, I've never yet found a nice electrical lubricant that makes the switch operation sound anything other than a bit 'clackety' however to get some switch cleaner on to the connections should be easy.

          Good luck.

          Cheers

          Julian
