    What's it worth

Due to a change of circumstance, I am going to have to sell the Stag. I really don't want to but I have little choice. Question is, what is it worth?

It's a tax exempt Mk1 in Sapphire blue. The body work is a bit dull and shabby in places, and I have been told that she requires £300-£400 worth of welding (outriggers) to get her through an MOT.

Mechanically she's sound and in the last year she has had new carpet, new fuel pump, new tyres, and new mohair hood amongst other things. When I first got her she spend a few days at Faversham Classics which cost me £900 for a service and new parts to replace various old cables and pipework etc.

She runs fine, o/d works in both 3rd and 4th and it has a servicable hardtop. Currently SORN. I have a box of bills going back years including an engine rebuild during the 90's.

So what do you guys think I should let her go for?

Shame that you have to sell, however circumstances change...... pricing without seeing is almost an impossible task..... but here's my two-pence worth.

If the MOT has/is about to expire i reckon it would be worth between 2 and 3K - i'm assuming that when you said it was mechanically sound the engine is fine and not making any 'expensive' noises. If your MOT still has at least 6 months to run its probably worth another £500 on top - 2.5 - 3.5K

My golden rule of thumb when considering what i'v spent is that doesn't really add to the value, it just makes your car slightly more or less appealing when compared to others for sale at the same time. Easiest way to answer is - What would you be prepared to pay if you turned up to see the car yourself as a prospective buyer without your local knowledge.

there you go - i'v laid down a marker for everyone else to have a go

    cheers....Andy

Thanks Andy. Yes it's ashame, but needs must at the moment. I WILL get another, I've promised myself that.

Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking £2k-£2.5k. The MOT ran out in December, hence on SORN. I should have mentioned that both doors are bubbling, but I've already got a replacement for the passenger side, and it's the right colour too. I just don't seem to have the time to do anything contructive to her at the moment.

If anyone on here is interested, please let me know as I would rather let an enthusiast have her, otherwise it's the small ads and e-bay I'm afraid. I'll post some pictures at the weekend so others can add their thoughts on value. I've loads of parts in boxes in the garage that I would include too, which might push the value up a bit - I've got new disks, 2 sets of pads, new brake cylinders, new rear shoes, stainless brake lines, a number of Smiths chrome dials, A Motolita leather wheel and lots of other bits and pieces too numerous to mention.

The more I think about it, the more gutting it is TBH.

If you end up advertising your car don't mention the extra spares in the ad, instead when a prospective buyer tries to knock you down (which they will) introduce the spares then, saying "I can't come down anymore on the price but I can throw in these extras."

Good luck! And I hope you can come back to Stag ownership before too long.

I wish you luck, but my experience is not hopeful.

I've advertised my car in the Stag mag as well elsewhere for around £4k for nearly a year now and had ONE phone call.

Its tidy, solid, MOT'd, tax free, good hood and hardtop, TV8 powered and kept in a dehumidified garage.

Luckily I'm not a great hurry to sell as I still enjoy driving it. Is just that I'm short of space.

I have heard people say that Ebay is a good market but I'm not convinced from the number of times some cars come up over time - presumably alot of timewasters.

And we're about to go into recession!!!! Or so the papers would have you believe. Have you tried advertising in Practical Classics? That was going to be my plan B after fleabay.

Wow, there a few very nice examples there. Mines not quite up to those, but there's a project car on there for £1500 and mines a few steps ahead of that as it runs and drives etc. so I reckon around £2000 would be fair. I could always sell all of the spares separately to the good folk on here.
