    Chassis number

    Hi. Stag was in for an mot yesterday (passed...... phew) and the tester said that the chassis number related to a 1971 car but the reg doc says the car is 1974 and it is on an "m" plate. I've had it for a year so this is the first mot I have put it in for. How do I find out the correct info for the car and where is the engine number located? Had a funny thing last year , I bought a fan for the viscous coupling (old one removed and kenlow in place) and had stipulated a mk2 but the fan that arrived did not fit making me think that the engine may be from a mk 1. Must admit the car is a bit of a mish mash. Deffo wouldn't win any prizes for origionallity! Any info greatly appreciated.

    A little disconcerting.
    I tnink the tester was being very nice to you. I believe the tester should check chassis number ( if possible) against number plate as first part of test and possibly not procede if regarded as suspicious.
    There may be simple reason such as non notification of a reshell of a rusty Stag but it could cause problems at next mot or on selling.

      There's been lots of discussion about people using the identity of a Mk1 Stag on a MK2 to avoid road tax, but it sounds as if this might be the first case of the opposite happening!

            Some MOT Testers get confused between the Chassis No and the Body No. They are similar. The body No is on a small plate in the engine bay on the N/S next to the bonet hinge. The Chassis No is on a plate on the bottom of the N/S B Post, visible when the door is open. This could be your problem.

              The body numbers usually fairly close to the chassis number. If the tester has pulled up results between 71 and 74 cars, something's amiss

                Good info there fellas. According to the mot paperwork, the reg doc and the stagbytriumph website all is correct. It is a '74 car (damn). Think the tester must have had a sherry or two watching the wedding in the morning and put the wrong thing in his computer. Ill keep those informative websites in my favourites. Thanks again.

                  I had a similar problem last year, mine is a 73 mk 2.
                  The mot tester (not my usual garage) said it showed as a 71 model. He wasn't concerned about it but did say I might be paying for tax when there was no need.
                  I applied for a heritage certificate,

                  and my car is exactly what it's supposed to be (a 73 mk2 - all numbers correct)

                  But, I think there may be a problem with the database mot testers use, when I came to tax it at the beginning of April this year, the post office said it wasn't mot'd. They checked my certificate and taxed it anyway. I've just mot'd it last weds at my usual garage and there is no problem.

                    Thats exactly what happened to me!

                        I had mine MOT last year and once passed I just kept the paper work in my file. About a month later VOSA were sending me letters saying that the chassis number was incorrect according to their records. Turned out that the guy had used the number from under the bonnet and not the one on the B post.
                        Phewww, I was sweating for a while.
