Paint for the air filter housing

The air filter housing on my Stag looks bad as the paint is flaking off. Does anyone know what paint is best to use to provide a durable finish in the original colour (or close)?

When I did the same job it was suggested I use Ford Dove grey as it was a close match to the original colour. I bought a can from Halfords and was very pleased with the result - the colour looks pretty good in my opinion, and is proving to be vry durable (2 years so far and no signs of flaking, fading etc).

    Cheers,

    Bob

Hi John, almost any paint will do, longevity is down to the amount of prep. The original colour, believe it or not, was Duck Egg Blue, Triumph had a huge stock of it left over from WW 11, when they built fighter aircraft. Martin.

Shame they didn't have a load of Merlin engines left over too!

I used Plasti-kote Smoke Gray 1085 (from Wlkinsons or DIY shops). Looks great.

No Bob, that's from history and observation ! Duck Egg Blue was the colour painted on the underside of most allied fighter aircraft in the European theatre, including the Spitfire. If you drop in at the TSSC clubhouse and museum, there's an old work bench painted in it, and an explanation. I believe the early prototype Spitfire was painted light grey. During the North African campaign, desert operating Spitfires were painted overall in pink, thank God there was none of that left ! Martin.

I think they also painted the high altitude reconnaissance Spitfires in pink as well, as it was the best camouflage colour at that height. I bet the pilots got a lot of stick!

I can't remember where I heard or read it but I seem to recall Land Rovers ended up in that shade of Green due to excess stocks of paint from the war.

If you want a durable finish get it powder coated. I did mine and my cam covers 8 years ago & they're still like new.
                            Cost about £15 each.
