    Kickdown BW35 Autobox.

I was at the local DVLA office this morning at 9am, out by 9.15 (one of the pleasures of living in the quiet East Riding!) with my tax disc in hand and then set off on my first 50 miles of 'shakedown' runs after the recommisioning. One slight fuel weep from the output side on the pump which I'll sort so that's great. My query is when should the autobox kickdown? I tried it at 50mph but it stayed in 3rd.....I assumed that it would drop to 2nd and lift the front! The Haynes manual only refers to speeds of up to about 31mph when it should drop from 2nd to 1st.......but as usual I read that after I got back in........Thanks in advance. Mel.

Hi Mel, I don't know the exact figures, but that's not right. Look closely at the kickdown cable where it joins the carb linkage, is there a tiny crimped collar on the inner cable ? if so, that should be set so that it's ONLY JUST clear of the outer cable threaded section, 1 mm or less. If it's missing, you have two choices, either take the transmission sump off (Workshop manual) or screw the outer cable downwards, about one eighth of an inch and road test, no joy ? repeat in small increments till it does what you want. Martin.

I agree with Martin but also make sure you are achieving full throttle first, if not make sure it's not just the carpet under the pedal preventing it before you adjust anything.

Good point Ian, but you should still have part throttle kickdown available at lower speeds, i.e. Mel's 50 mph. Martin.

Thanks Martin. Just been back into the garage and found the adjuster screwed all the way in. I've backed it off about 8mm to get 1mm between the crimp and the outer cable adjuster. I'll give it try on the road tomorrow. Again. thanks. Mel.
