    Gas bonnet struts

Has anybody tried to fit gas struts as bonnet openers/stay?

I had to remove all of the original stay components for an engine conversion. Now I'm TV8 again I'd like to stop panicking every time someone opens the bonnet.

isn't that weird, I was just wondering about such an upgrade myself yesterday - it must have been the strong wind blowing the bonnet about (when it was up) over the weekend.......!

I was thinking about a couple off something like a small hatchback, unless I could a couple of scrap ones off a merc or a volvo bonnet............... Not terribly sure about how and where to fix them - so their go down completely - and actually do some good - geometery required I think..............

If you fit gas struts on the bonnet, and the catch is released whilst driving, the bonnet will pop up; er........

Are you sure Chris? I have never been smacked in the face (though some may disagree) by a bonnet or tailgate automatically rising as soon as it is released. They need help to start lifting. The struts are fitted so that there is no vertical force when closed but as soon as the bonnet is lifted then the force becomes more vertical and the struts start pushing.

I think a number of people inc. M Heathcote? Have already done this mod.

I suppose it depens which struts you use and how you intsall them; just dont want anyone to have an accident, thats all.

I mean struts are ok for really heavy bonnets and tailgates like on modern cars, but the stag bonnet is not really heavy is it.

I've looked at the Camloc site that was listed in the old thread & RS components for struts. Both have suitable stuts OK.

My problem is I have the Mercedes header tank installed on the NS inner wing and it will be very tight to install a strut here.

My concern is if I install a single strut on the OS that there is a risk of bending the bonnet when closing.

Has anybody installed a single unit and if so does it place a lot of twisting action on the bonnet?
