Fixed Those Electrical Gremlins At Last!

Over the last few days I have finally tracked down a couple of Electrical probs I have been having.
Despite a new main and both sides of the body wiring looms being replaced the indicators, horns and the washer bottle would not work.
After a bit of research on the forum I read about the power of sugary teeth rotting drinks and soaked my fuse box in Coca Cola overnight and got the horn relay working.

Still no indicators or washers though. So I then dipped the tips of the plug ends of both the stalks in coke overnight which resulted in the Indicators sort of working, but still left the washers doing nothing. The bulb holders in the boot all needed their spade contacts cleaning with wet and dry to ensure proper contact was being made and finally had the Indicators flashing correctly.

I then pulled off the end of the washer stalk and found that the spring inside was going rusty and not making proper contact (looked like it had got wet and corroded) - so I changed it with a spring from an old damaged one and voila - washers now work too.

Electrics are such a nightmare - but it is soooo satisfying when you finally nail the little blighter that has been causing you so much pain.

Very nicely done Dave, and as you say, hugely satisfying. Just goes to show the value of perseverance - not to mention cokey colee ! Martin.

      Thanks Martin,

I hate ruddy electrics, and very nearly called someone in to try and sort them. But am soooo glad now as I have saved myself a small fortune and also learnt quite a bit that'll hopefully help me in the future.

      Dave.

I am pleased to hear that Dave.

I do hope that, despite being bouyed with the success of Coke in terms of combating corrosion, you decided NOT to put it in the washer bottle?!

Any Cocal Cola left? I hear it goes well with Bacardi

No doubt you could have done with some to celebrate...........

              All,

this is what these forums are all about - sharing your experiences to allow others to benefit from your trying times.

No Coke in the washer bottle! but plenty in my wifes drink - she was a bit miffed I was using up all her precious Coke up. I will be going out for a few scooners of ale tonight though.

This weekend will be spent changing the wood over on the dash and testing "everything" electrical before installing the center console and if the rest of my new bits arrive form JP's fitting those too.

              Dave.
