    Wiper motor refurb

I'm currently refurbing the wiper motor and would like to know what finish the actual motor cover is closest to the OEM finish. It seemed to have a wrinkle effect finish that was a pewter colour, but this came off with a little degreaser and fine wire wool too easily to have felt like an OEM finish.

Also what grease have people used in place of ragosine listate? It appears to be slightly lighter / thinner than LM grease which I assume doesn't offer as much resistance to the drive of the wipers.

Hiya, any good quality LM grease does the job. The original motor finish is a dark metallic grey, the gearbox is natural finish ali and the cover is silver painted steel. Few survive to original spec so you needn't worry too much about accurate colours. Martin.

Nigeboy, you must be planning on going into the internals of your wiper motor. I have thought on many occasions of going into mine and greasing it up etc, but just have'nt plucked up the courage incase I bust it. Could you take some pics as you go along and post them, so I could get and idea what I may let myself into mate

Mike, I have already stripped it down and taken quite a few pics en route. Will get them made a bit smaller for posting over the weekend.

Before re-assembly I am waiting for which grease / oil to use on the rebuild, but it doens't look like anything was too worn, just rusty and filthy on the outside. I am rebuilding and restoring the whole car from a garage wreck, so am stripping everything as I go

Good stuff that's the way to go. Looking forward to pictures. The paint on my motor is coming off, but nothing seems to be rusty. I was considering taking it out and spray painting it but was a little apprehensive as I said

I'd be interested in those photos and a step by step guide. I've got to strip mine down soon and need something to give me the courage to start .... either instructions to follow or several vodkas will do it!!

It's quite straightforward, even the tricky bits are easy when you know how. Firstly, remove the U clamp, this allows enough flex to twist the motor towards you, you can then pull off the multi-plug, do NOT undo the screws holding it to the body. Once the top plate is off, the internals will try and escape, the outer part of the rack is held in place by it, so hold the plate in place while you remove the screws. Make sure the rack is not under tension and lift off the plate. You now need to remove the crank, the C clip and washers on the peg on the large wheel come off easily, now lift the crank straight up, this also frees it from the rack inner. As the rack comes free you can lift the motor clear, keeping it in it's normal orientation so bits don't fall out. If you look carefully, where the rack made it's connection, you'll see the white plastic self park slider, make absolutely certain you know which way up it is, and which end is nearer the rack, it has a slight ramp shape underneath. When that's off you'll see the tiny white plastic parking switch. From here on it's pretty obvious. When you pull the motor cover off, look for a tiny ball bearing at the bolt hole end, they didn't all have it but if there it must go back. Sorry I can't come up with any pics but hopefully, some kind soul on here will. Martin.

I have added a few photos below, but as said, it's fairly straight forward - just mind the springs on the brushes and the ball bearing on the spindle and watch the park switch for the correct way round - it's a white plastic piece alongside the crank
