    Steering Wheel Spokes

My Mk2 original steering wheel has slots in the spokes and I've noticed that some pictures show black inserts in these spokes. Are these MIA on mine or were there wheels with and without?

    Hi Drew,

The inserts were only fitted on the very late cars, last year or two of production I think.

Hi Drew, my 77 MOD has inserts. According to http://www.stagbytriumph.co.uk/ this is what it should be but there is no mention of when it started.
      Peter, Cupar

3 spoke alloy with padded rim and centre boss. The Mk 1 steering wheel was 16 inches (406 mm) in diameter while the Mk2 was reduced to 14½ inches (368 mm). Some late cars had the slots in the spokes filled with black rubber. The steering column is adjustable by approximately 4 inches (102mm) axially and 2 inches (51mm) vertically and incorporates an anti-theft locking device.

Cheers Ian and Peter - puts my mind at rest!

Any idea if they can be had separately as mine has quite a bit of corrosion inside the slots and it would be nice if I could hide it.

I read somewhere that the inserts were to stop your bracelets/wrist chains from getting jammed in the slots!

I was working in a Triumph dealership when the inserts were first introduced and I remember hearing this suggested at the time. Whether that was an official line or not, I'm not sure.

On a vaguely related note, I do remember testing a Stag and pressing the zero trip button whilst I was on the road - unfortunately, I'd not thought about the bend coming up and instinctively turned the wheel whilst my hand was between the spokes

Fortunately for me, the stalk broke before my wrist

            Cheers
