Stag used by Charlie & Di on honeymoon

Hi All

In one of the weekend papers there was an article about the Royal family. One of the photos was of Charles and Diana going on off on honeymoon sitting in the back of a Triumph Stag. What stuck as being odd was the total lack of a T bar. Perhaps they had strengthened the bodyshell to allow its removal? Otherwise the body would have bowed and the doors jammed.

Hi Bruce.
Presumably back then, it was a relatively new car with no bodyshell strength loss due to corrosion.
There should be no problem. Don't forget, the T bar is only bolted on. It cannot be a major scource of strength unless it was welded. It would provide some roll over protection and resistance to body shake (scuttle shake) on rough roads.
However (there's always one!), it provides a fine way to hold my windscreen in place while I repair the huge holes at the base. Perhaps Triumph were thinking ahead!

This cropped up somewhere in the early days of this forum.
The Stag was owned by the then Governor of Gibraltar and loaned to the Royal Couple for the duration of their stay there.
In one of the early reviews of the Stag the tester said he had been told by BL that he could remove the T bar if he wished. (No electrics in a Mk1 T bar!).

Are they also sitting on cushions? Their heads would be above the T Bar if it was fitted.

If I remember correctly, someone on here uses their stag without a T-bar. I think it's black,the stag not the t-bar.

They may well have been, and the T Bar probably went for the same reason......Photographs.

Didn't I read some where that this particular Stag is being being restored?

I seem to recall that this was talked about in the press or the SOC Mag at the time. I understood that the T Bar was only removed to allow Chuck & Di to get in and out of the back elegantly and be seen more clearly. I thought they only used the Stag to go between the airport and the Royal Yacht.

There are pictures of Miss World 2009 in the same car (Registration G-30812) 28 years later here and here, and the T-bar has now been re-attached.
