has any one had trouble with their nuts

excuse the title, but on a more serious note ive got ally wheel nuts all round on my current stag and ive owned stags for over twenty years all had ally nuts.i just had a conversation with someone about the pros and cons and was bashed into a corner with a resounding "they are crap /dangerous etc" so get rid!! thing is ive never had one single problem with them in twenty plus years of taking them on and off ive heard lots of people moan about them but not heard any tales of woe.so is it just people are scared of them or do they realy represent a problem and i have been very lucky??
im in the middle of refubing my drive shafts and have purchased all new wheel studs front and rear but didnt think it was required to spend a vast amount of hard earned on new steel nuts.
i know it is forty plus years since the design stages of the car but engineering principles ,fundementals and the dynamics have not changed about these materials and i refuse to believe the designers were amis with this option on the grounds that i have had no issues with them and not heard of any.

There is nothing wrong with alloy nuts until they have been overtightened. The usual problem is tyre fitters and air guns, I watched them strip two alloy Dolomite Sprint nuts in quick sucsession many years ago, and used to use a torque wrench when fitting them until I got to grips with how tight they should be. I have some rapidly rusting steel ones on the Stag, but am still using rust free alloy ones on the Sprint alloys on my Toledo

Hi Steve, obviously the person you were talking to is a drama queen ! I swapped my alloy nuts for stainless, because I know of some that had stripped, and steel is a better material from an engineering point of view. HOWEVER, if you've had no probs for all those years, don't bother.
I suspect Neil has put his finger on it, 17 year old tyre fitters with badly adjusted air guns. Martin.

martin im thinking you and neil are spot on ive not heard anything to sway me from ally and not had any issues, then im not swinging a nutrunner around when i change wheels ........so i think i will save the money and leave well alone. anyway i like the look of the black ally nuts.
dave (new to this ) i bet those stainless nuts cost a pretty penny!!!

I paid about £70 for mine when i had the stag alloys but it wasn't the cost that shocked me as much as the weight (unsprung).

            Cheers Steve

Be careful when replacing the alloy nuts for there are some steel alternatives on the market that are very slightly smaller in outside diameter than the original alloy nuts.
This results in the wheel never being centralised on the hub resulting in balancing problems.
One of our local members tracked down a persistant wheel balancing problem to the new wheel nuts he purchased with this problem.

stick with alloy nuts unless you use gorilla tactics for tightening them.

I collected a set and had them re anodised. No probs so far

                        Hi Steve,
I changed mine to stainless steel when I took wheels off to clean and found 2 broken ones.

i assume you mean the nuts and not the studs george, sounds as though they were maybe a poor quality any problems since.i am deffinately going to keep my alloy nuts i think especialy as ive found another spare set i had so i will get them re-anodised black as they are in quite good nick.
