Advice, thoughts and ideas for my next car!

The Jag's up for sale! I need something more practical as we have decided to get a dog (some of you may remember my old pooch died just over a year ago)

    So the brief is:

    An estate of some kind?
Budget around £3k (depending on how much I get for the Jag)
SWMBO has to approve (this could be the hard bit!)
Not a Mondeo, simply because I've had 2 before and fancy something different.

I have something in mind (which might surprise you, so keeping quiet for now) but I wanted you guys to come up with something that I might not have considered.

    TIA!!

    Mk 2 Triumph 2500 estate i doubt you'll find a 2.5PI for that money.

Alternatively try Merc W124 or Pre-2001 E-Class - you would be surprised at the choice your budget will bring

We have two labradors and wouldn't be without my Landrover Defender...easily my (second) best car having owned Jags (XKR, XJs), BMW 645.

Steve: Interesting choices, wouldn't have considered either of them so will do a bit of research.

Andy: It can't be another classic as it will be living outside and I just don't like German cars (Nothing against the people!)

Richard: Unfortunatley the Disco is on SWMBO's banned list, but is more the kind of thing I was thinking of. (Just the one Lab for me, good choice there!)

        Keep 'em coming!

Edit: just re-read Defender not Disco, a bit agricultural for me!

Hi Kevin, no suggestions about another Car but great to hear your are getting another Mutt again, my old Fella "Milo" is really old now, I have always had rescue dog's last autumn I took another one on, a Jack Russell puppy but only had him for 18 days when he died suddenly, I have another now a Boarder Collie, you have done better than I could, I can't imagine not having a dog around and going out walking. 3 cars in the family, the dog car is a Mondeo Ghia estate.

            Cheers Ian.

Above cars obtainable within the £3k budget???

Sorry but any car that uses twice as much fuel as a Stag is not fun.

It's been tough walking my boy to school without him, at first I just wanted my dog back, but gradually I've accepted that he had a good innings and a good life and that is just the way it is with pets, they don't live as long as people. I wasn't sure how I would start again with a puppy until it occurred to me that I could take it to work with me (not on the bike of course!) it will have somewhere safe to sleep and lots of attention throughout the day from staff and customers.
V.excited at the thought right now.

I know you said you don't like German cars, but I only drive them myself. I used to have the Passat estate which is a good all rounder, and if you go for the diesel they can be tuned for better economy and power at low cost.

Tempting, but I think I'll be scraping the barrel on my budget.

However, my general feeling is to go for 'spec' over age, in other words a highish mileage car with high spec is preferable to a newer more basic model. I won't be doing huge mileage myself.

ah £3k - I missed that - what about a 1.5 megane, hatch or estate - 60mpg and £35 road tax............... you should be able to get a 2003/4/5 one for about £3k privately - watch out for mileage - timing belt on the diesel needs done at 70k miles ... mind you I only paid £5k for the 2005 V50(40k miles) last year - you can get that in a 1.5 diesel too - better mpg and lower tax.......

                            Jensen - what 17mpg - frugal I'd say - for fun mileage..............
